RIP Walter Brueggemann 1933-2025

Walter Brueggemann (1933-2025) was a towering figure in biblical scholarship, a gifted preacher, a kind and generous soul, a gregarious character with an easy laugh…and a friend. He will be missed immensely.

Today is the birthday of naturalist, author and photographer Edwin Way Teale (1899-1980). Winner of the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for Wandering Through Winter, he and his wife Nellie traveled across the US and ultimately wrote 34 books on the seasons. He also won a John Burroughs Medal for Near Horizons

It's the birthday of writer and environmentalist Sigurd Olson (1899-1982). He advocated for the protection of wilderness and was instrumental in the creation of the Boundary Waters and Voyageurs NP. He helped draft the Wilderness Act. One of his best know works: Runes of the North (1963).

It's the birthday of American naturalist John Burroughs (1837-1921). He wrote about the nature he found in his beloved Catskill mountains of New York; birds, hills, squirrels (even cows), the ordinary nature most of us encounter every day. We're drawn to spectacular vistas, but live in the ordinary.

I agree! I remember having to wait for the 3rd book to come out. The trilogy is one of my all time favorites. I reread it every 3-4 years or so.
