It was fun to speak with Bob McDonald in the last segment of this week’s episode of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks about my book Food Intelligence coauthored with @juliabelluz.bsky.social. www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks...
I listened to part of this today & as usual with Simon's podcast, it is great. Lots of good information about processed food & what we know versus don't understand.
I'm also halfway through Kevin's book Food Intelligence and highly recommend it.
It was a pleasure to finally have a discussion with Simon Hill about a wide range of topics in nutrition, metabolism, and obesity science!

This is one of the most important issues with the global food system, yet it is often ignored.
Put simply, we don't actually grow much *food* in our farms around the world. Instead, we grow grossly inefficient animal feed and biofuels.

This reveals one of the challenges that Director Bhattacharya has in developing trust.
It often appears that he doesn't know what is actually happening at NIH or lies about it.
He comes up with positive-sounding or benign explanations that are not based on facts.

It was a pleasure to join my co-author of Food Intelligence @juliabelluz.bsky.social as a guest on the #AmericanDish podcast hosted by food policy journalist @hbottemiller.bsky.social

The quiet part being illuminated: there have been very few new awards from NIH this fiscal year, for some very specific reasons 🆘

@kevinh-phd.bsky.social in the German news! @zeit.de
Good scientists are leaving NIH.
Counter to the quote from HHS, NIH is struggling to recruit qualified scientists to replace them.
My own role sits empty. NIH cannot replace me since I am still employed but prevented from working.
This admin is gutting science.

“If this is a topic of interest, you should fund a lot more rigorous nutrition research that would be able to accurately assess whether or not so much a claim is founded,” Hall said. www.washingtonpost.com/health/2026/...
Every word Andrew Nixon-the HHS spokesman-says is a lie including “and” and “the.” He’s a 12 year old in an empty suit spouting drivel and lying to the American public.
Thanks Randy!

A review of my book #FoodIntelligence with @juliabelluz.bsky.social in Network Health Dietitians magazine:
Spoke with a PI whose postdoc is trapped abroad because of social media vetting. It appears the postdoc missed disclosing one account and it's unclear if they can come back… ever.
This is the country we live in now.
Key Takeaways from NIH Director Bhattacharya's hearing from Miriam and Bethesda Declaration whistleblower Jenna Norton (speaking in personal capacity). Our analysis? "Oof."

Thanks for the thoughtful review!
The language on multiyear funding (MYF) is ineffective.
Final bill anchors MYF to 2025 instead of 2024. This means MYF will likely continue at the same rate we saw last year, where NCI's payline from ~10% to 4%.
This is incredibly harmful to the US research workforce - especially early career.
My book #FoodIntelligence with @juliabelluz.bsky.social has been selected for a Kindle Daily Deal in the UK on 21st January. amzn.eu/d/gfe5I51
My book #FoodIntelligence with @juliabelluz.bsky.social was the subject of a weight loss book club on a YouTube channel hosted by a delightful couple who have been battling obesity. I was happy to join them live yesterday to discuss our book and answer questions.

The US is home to only 3 of the top 25 universities globally in research impact (#3, #20, and #23).
In 2009, we were home to 15 out of 25, including the #1 spot.
It would be the unforced error of the century to scale back on our national investment in science now.

Here's a recent article by protein expert Stu Phillips putting things in appropriate context:

Right, so right in the ballpark of what most young and middle aged adults are already eating. No need for products like this:
Are they really recommending a lot more protein than Americans are already eating? bsky.app/profile/kevi...
Average protein intake is actually closer to 1.3 g/kg per day with these assumptions, but the point is that it's substantially higher than the RDA.
