Tragedy of the horizon on steroids: the green transition and credit ratings How do financial markets influence the green transition? Advocates of harnessing markets to foster the green transition claimed that market rationality is a reliable mechanism to channel investment...

Publication alert! 🔔

My new article in @ripejournal.bsky.social shows that the way in which credit ratings assess climate risks is detrimental to chances of the green transition.

Line chart showing atmospheric CO₂ concentration at Mauna Loa Observatory from 1958 to 2024. A light blue sawtooth line shows raw monthly values, reflecting the seasonal cycle of plant growth. A dark blue smooth line shows the seasonally adjusted record, rising from 315 ppm in 1958 to over 426 ppm in 2024.

A dashed red curve shows the super-exponential fit, with the instantaneous growth rate rising from 0.27%/yr in 1960 to 0.64%/yr in 2024, more than doubling over the period of the record.

1/ Why is atmospheric CO₂ accelerating faster than fossil fuel emissions are growing?

The answer is buried in the data, and it's more worrying than most people realise.

A thread. 🧵👇

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

Quite concerning results about the use of LLMs for text annotation: almost all models produce outcomes that reproduce racial stereotypes.

Reminder to avoid the Thiel distraction. A point we’ve been hitting on tour is the temptation to apply intellectual history methods to a regime of accumulation (digital capitalism) is misguided. You won’t understand the Tech Right by reading books (they don’t read). Look at how they run their firms.

I have seen a lot of cursed stuff in my time in academia but this is among the *most* cursed.
Grammarly is generating miniature LLMs based on academic work so that users can have their writing ‘reviewed’ by experts like David Abulafia, who died less than two months ago.

The war on Iran likely brings a new oil price shock and windfall profits.

So, who stands to win?

Our research shows: Last time around (2022), the US reaped the largest fossil fuel profits of any country ($377bn). 50% went to the top 1%, only 1% to the bottom 50%. A🧵

How to stop a dictator I spent months studying how authoritarians like Trump lose. The answer is shockingly simple.

I have spent the past several months studying the cutting-edge research on modern democracies that have defeated authoritarian leaders.

I've learned that the conventional wisdom on the topic is wrong — in ways that have clear implications for the US going forward

The Starmer/McSweeney strategy followed the illusion of needing to win back the nativist-authoritarian worker and in the process alienated those who form their actual electoral coalition. This has been the story of social democratic parties across Europe. This won’t be easily reversible.

If he’d actually seriously taken on the recession, there wouldn’t have been a Trump. One day, we may finally be able to have that conversation. But almost no one is ready for that & probably won’t be for a generation:

Here is the User Guide for ELITE, the Tool Palantir Made for ICE 404 Media is publishing a version of the user guide for ELITE, which lets ICE bring up dossiers on individual people and provides a “confidence score” of their address.

A manual for ICE's immigrant-targeting computer system, Palantir ELITE, was leaked today.

Let's look at it, then step back to evaluate how far we've come along a dangerous road and where that road might take us. 🧵

I'm honestly less mad at the President, who is clearly not well, that I am at his outriders and enablers.

They see messages like this and then, with straight faces, go on television or write op-eds retroactively constructing grand strategy justifications.

Pathetic.
