Instant-Pot Italian Chickpea Stew With Pesto Chickpeas are the basis for this savory Italian stew, which gets an extra kick from a spoonful of intensely flavored pesto at serving time. This recipe calls for making the pesto from scratch because ...

Far tastier than it has any right to be, given the few ingredients. www.epicurious.com/recipes/food...

Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?

ProPublica spoke to about 150 people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.”

We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words.

Cosmopolitan, egalitarian values are better than authoritarian values and it would be cool if one of our two political parties argued as much instead of spending decades trying to avoid cultural arguments by clinging to "it's the economy stupid" or "kitchen table issues" or "affordability."

EU ‘veggie burger’ ban stalls after talks collapse An MEP’s crusade for naming restrictions on non-meat foods expands to ‘liver’ and ‘ham’ — but national governments aren’t buying it.

Good! This is a genuinely embarrassing effort, especially at the time when the Europe has real problems to address.

I am increasingly of the opinion that people who change menus and look and feel of computer software just so that you know it's a new version should be personally forced to play tech support to my mother for five months.

Top researchers consider leaving U.S. amid funding cuts: 'The science world is ending' A poll from the journal Nature found that 75% of researchers in the U.S. are considering leaving the country. That includes a man who’s been dubbed the "Mozart of Math." Stephanie Sy examines what’s b...

The US funds the bulk of biomedical research globally by far. It's not like other countries can simply take up the slack. The more likely: people leave research, new people don't become researchers. There is no happy ending. www.pbs.org/newshour/sho...

NYT post with photos of No Kings rallies with the text describing rallies against "Trump's actions that they see as authoritarian" with "they see as" changed to "are"

Text needed a little fixing but still great to see so many patriotic people with so much enthusiasm for saving our democracy.

it is so important for the public to know about this terrible waste of talent, curiosity, wonder, and progress

too much of science -- how it's made, who makes it, and how and why -- is hidden from public view

these stories need to be told

I've heard colleagues say that the solution to what's happening to American science is for scientists to communicate the value of science better. That's false. Trump is doing a lot of unpopular things, including destroying the science enterprise. What's happening is not our fault. 1/2

My account is officially a "Jon Green stan acccount" (@modestholdings.com). Jon Green, an Iowa county supervisor who refuses to lower the flag for Charlie Kirk, is the tip of the "no, I won't do what you tell me" spear.
Hell.effing.YESSSSSSSS.

Let's be more like Jon Green. 👍😁

Our political media is simply not equipped to handle a situation where the voters were unambiguously wrong in a way which morally implicates the electorate.

Iowa officials warn more rural hospitals may close under proposed Medicaid cuts Plans by Senate Republicans to scale back a Medicaid provider tax that states like Iowa use to fund their Medicaid program could deal a greater financial blow to rural hospitals, state and national ho...

20 IA hospitals currently at risk of closing, 5 facing immediate shutdown.

When a hospital closes, the entire community suffers. They can pretend this is just about Medicaid, but these cuts will decimate rural health care. Do they think no one will notice?!

I just have to say, as a historian of the Reconstruction-era Klan, that masked paramilitaries are very bad and masked vigilantes are even worse and there are causal links between the two and none of this is good for democracy.

How the Farm Industry Spied on Animal Rights Activists and Pushed the FBI to Treat Them as Bioterrorists For years, a powerful ‘Big Ag’ trade group served up information on activists to the FBI. Records reveal a decade-long effort to see the animal rights movement labeled a “bioterrorism” threat.

Imagine if the government expended even half of this effort actually protecting the welfare of ag animals.

DOGE vowed to make government more ‘efficient’ — but it’s doing the opposite New procedures and requirements — some implemented in the name of improving operations — are slowing down federal agencies.

Kudos to WaPo--more coverage like this please! Efficiency isn't the outcome and wasn't intended to be. Everyone should know how they are intentionally breaking your government to prove a point and making you less safe and less healthy in the process.

It should be easy for ATC to have clean windows!

So we're crashing the global economy to stop China from "eating our lunch" and then handing them *decades* of scientific and technological supremacy. Is this the 4D chess?

I live overseas now but before we moved here, I moved back to Iowa for a while and changed my residency (and voter registration). Instead of calling Van Hollen, Alsobrooks, and Raskin I have to deal with Ernst, Grassley, and Hinson. Sigh.
