If #climate protesters had ever caused even a fraction of the disruption now being experienced across Ireland, there would likely be calls by now from rural TDs for the return of the death penalty.

They’re hanging a bicycle by a noose. Because bikes are the cause of high oil prices, apparently. That’s some high quality protesting there.

Would you try an energy rationing experiment? Cut back on fuel & electricity, keep a short diary, and share your experience for a feature. Interested? Email geraldine.herbert@independent.ie or DM asap please
RTs very much appreciated #JournoRequest
Cars are kings in Ireland.
Another perfect example of our dysfunctional, unhealthy, car-centric transport system, where cars and drivers are prioritised above all else.
A stacked area chart of the electricity generation mix on the island of Ireland with the following fuel types: battery, pumped storage, biomass, waste-to-energy, hydro, solar, wind, oil, and gas. There is also a black line showing electricity demand. Footnote reads: All-island figures. Excludes rooftop solar. Source: EirGrid, SEMO
A treemap of the electricity mix on the island of Ireland with the following fuel types: battery, pumped storage, biomass, hydro, solar, wind, oil, gas, and waste-to-energy. Larger sources are annotated with the GWh and percentage of total generation that source comprised. Footnote reads: All-island figures. Excludes rooftop solar. Source: EirGrid, SEMO
A closer look at Friday, which saw an unprecedented *two* major records broken on the Irish grid in a single day: battery discharge and solar output.
Batteries met roughly 4.5% of the morning peak load, while solar met almost 7% of the entire day's demand 🔋 ☀️

Earthjustice is suing Trump’s EPA for repealing the endangerment finding and trying to abandon its responsibility to protect us from climate change.
Love seeing this move forward 💪
The most important line of this article comes at the end:
"The Department of Heritage, which has responsibility for national parks, referred questions to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries"
The dept in charge of national parks has no authority for what happens in our marine national park!
Trying to encourage use of the stripes in Comms at work. No luck yet, having to satisfy myself with wearing my stripes shirt instead.
But this is a useful service demo of them in action!
Since (gratefully) getting paid to work in climate action, I have unexpectedly felt lonelier, and have had less energy to stay engaged with environmental current affairs.
It's very easy to work very hard in a ... less connected bubble.
I really want to reverse that & reconnect with bigger picture!
Oooh...
I am again calling out the vacuous nature of declaring an area a National Park without plans, resources or management measures. This time following the report showing that over a thousand seals were drowned in fishing gear around the Blasket Islands.

Faced with triple crises of climate breakdown, biodiversity loss & pollution, we need to ensure environmental laws remain strong

Book resting on a fleecy blanket. Book cover is: Climate Worrier - A Hypocrite's Guide to Saving The Planet by Colm O'Regan. The letter "o" in "worrier" is planet Earth in flames. Cover blurbs read, "Made me laugh and think and feel a little lighter" from Irish Times, and, "A winning combination of drily hilarious and thought-provoking, often all at once" from Sunday Independent
I didn't expect to see my own thoughts and feelings splayed quite so consistently across 290 pages 😭❤️🩹
A slow read for me, because of repeatedly switching between crying and laughing.
I fear a great many journalists and even environmental orgs did not read the most recent IPCC report past the Summary for Policymakers. Here's why that is a big problem: that part of the report is the only one that is lobbied to hell and back by politicians. Saudi + US pushed CCS hype into it
We live in a climate changed world.

That'll learn it. Its brief separation from its sole mate now unnecessarily, heart-breakingly, prolonged by its own foolhardy refusal to come out when it should have. Tough love.
Russia and China, have ramped up recruitment efforts targeting US federal employees—particularly those recently fired or at risk of termination. These efforts are unfolding aggressively on LinkedIn, where adversaries are reaching out under the guise of job opportunities, networking, and consulting.
On Friday, a whole mountain west of Glengarriff was burnt, with a wall of flames visible through the night for miles around.
It's pure ecocide, layered on top of ecocide (sheep), and it just beggars belief that this is still going on in the year 2025.
Trump cares so deeply about lives lost ("on both sides", classic Trump faux-diplomacy) that security guarantees are somehow less important than being thanked sufficiently.
Vance dropped the curtain on an utter shitshow, it was going to end like that one way or another.
The legality (not wisdom) of putting European private data on US clouds hinges on the availability of the US Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board. Trump neutered this board, and the European parliament has taken notice & asked the European Commission what they think:
