After a year of work, the conference on Conflict, War and Violence in the Early Modern World @earlymodernwar.bsky.social could not have gone better. Thank you again to all speakers and attendees, to my fellow organisers and our sponsors @exeter.ac.uk and @swwdtp.bsky.social for making it happen! 🗡️
Once again, we thank you all for your support. And especially the organisers, Dylan Neill Andrés @dylanneill.bsky.social , Teoni Passereau @teonipassereau.bsky.social, Tom Gayton and Padmanabha Reddy Addula. We hope to see you all again in future editions of the conference! 🗡️⚓⚔️🏴☠️
The two keynotes were representative of our wide variety of topics, from land and maritime warfare to the boundaries of legitimacy surrounding early modern violence and the impact and representation of such violence in its various forms. All through a range of excellent panels!
We would like to thank our two keynote speakers, Mark Stoyle and Jo Esra. While Mark took us back to Civil War Exeter with a talk and guided walk along the city walls, Jo made us think about the emotional consequences of such violence by looking into the experiences of pirate captives ⚔️🏴☠️
What an incredible couple of days! It was a real pleasure to host such amazing speakers on a wide variety of topics relating to conflict and violence in the early modern period 🗡️
Thank you to everyone who spoke, attended and supported us, and especially to our sponsors @swwdtp.bsky.social !
Really looking forward to this!

We will continue with more representations of violence, this time on the early modern stage, before returning with some more pictures of maritime violence with naval accounts and concluding by discussing England's conflicting relations with its neighbours in the late 17c 🌍
On Day 2, we'll be adding a maritime flavour by looking at unlawful violence at sea ⚓ Starting with Dr Jo Esra's keynote on North African pirates and interpreting interdisciplinary approaches to violence before moving on to the transformation of privateering during the 18c 🏴☠️
On Day 1, we'll be discussing early modern representations of violence and relations between armies and civilians, before delving into the English West Country's experience of Civil War, concluding with a keynote and guided tour by Professor Mark Stoyle 🗡️
