Got some help today cleaning and downloading data from my barometric sensors. A future wetland scientist perhaps?

Saw a group of these mysterious organisms floating in brackish riverine conditions yesterday. Very Cnidarian-like, ranging from 3–8 cm diameter. Anyone have a clue what this is?
Are you involved in the environmental sector? How many colleagues do you know purely by their email sign-off, or a small thumbnail in a zoom meeting? It’s time we changed that.

The Confluence, happening April 24th at the Fraser River Discovery Centre.
Our mini-documentary on our new process-based marsh creation pilot project is now online! Thanks to Fernando Lessa for the fantastic footage 📽️.

My colleagues at @raincoast.org have info on how to lobby for the renewal of these funds: www.raincoast.org/2026/03/prot...
A reminder that this and many other innovative restoration projects are the result of the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund - a fund that the federal government promised to renew in their election platform but are yet to do so.
Images of the now-completed Tilbury Process-based Marsh Establishment Pilot Project in the Fraser Estuary. 350 m of low-tech dams, 2000 donor marsh plantings, 10 goose exclosures, and > 300 volunteer hours. Now comes the fun part – monitoring!
Abstracts are due this Friday for the upcoming Pacific Estuarine Research Society annual meeting held from April 23–25 in Newport Oregon. If you haven't attended before, these meetings are a great place to meet west coast/estuarine researchers and practitioners! pers-cerf.org/pers-2026/

This innovative project is funded by the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund, which the Federal government has yet to renew (despite promising to do so in their election platform). Fingers crossed that funding will arrive to support this and other innovative projects in Coastal B.C.
This project is a major component of my PhD research in @forestry.ubc.ca, the results of which I look forward to sharing with you down the road. Many thanks to my colleagues at Ducks Unlimited Canada for taking the lead on many of the management elements of the project.

It's been a wild few weeks overseeing the construction of an experimental marsh creation project in the Fraser River Estuary. This project aims to accelerate accretionary processes, encouraging the river to build a marsh for us. We are testing exclosures, planting, and different low-tech structures.
A few come to mind:
- vibrating cafeteria tables
- penny hockey using gaps in the table corners
- gravity-defying soft serve ice cream servings
- arcade machines that sometimes work
- age-old internal conflict between running to grab a coffee vs. holding up the loading line in Tsawwassen
Let's hope this is an indication that the BC Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund will also be renewed!
So sorry to hear that Rufus Guitar Shop is closing after more than 40 years. The number of music stores in Greater Vancouver is dwindling, yet they are irreplaceable in providing repairs, expertise, and a place to sit and try things. A reminder to support local businesses wherever possible!
Nooooo! I noticed it disappeared from my local grocery store about a month ago and was hoping it was just a shortage.
Reading it right now and loving it!

Just remember that means listening and asking before making grand announcements with the leader of a neighbouring province.

It is not too late for Carney to pivot, and redirect federal support from the industries of yesterday to the industries of tomorrow.

Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani, and a little bit of Lythrum salicaria. An oligohaline site.
Glad it offered you some tranquility. Let me know if you're ever up here and I can introduce you to the estuary :) White Sturgeon fishing is catch and release in the Fraser, and quite the experience! We rarely see them in person, apart from an occasional breach or mortality.
There is no greater remedy for a desk-bound, stir-crazy me than a walk in the Fraser Estuary. Even on a January evening during an atmospheric river.
Baffling! And also baffling that they largely ignore this platform, and in so doing further solidify their support for X. At least show that you support the alternatives.
Agreed! I'd also add that having foundational identification skills is essential, particularly for professionals using iNat in their respective fields. The AI algorithm is not a substitute for professional competency.
In an effort to make my desk time more healthy, I have come across this free, intuitive, and extremely helpful little desktop app. Would highly recommend if you need something to remind you to take a break now and then!

It is in the mouth of the largest and most productive estuary in BC, a critical stopover point for birds along the pacific flyway, and supports the largest salmon runs of any river in BC. Getting the recent RBT2 project approved was a drawn out and contentious process, and rightfully so.

Thanks Ucluelet - a much-needed breath of fresh air.
