Starting a mid-decade redistricting war only to end up with -1 seats is the same fine strategic genius and subtle grasp of game theory that brough us the Strait of Hormuz.

Book rights were tied up for a while in the Unbound bankruptcy (eatf.art/unbound for context). Now that they're fully untangled, I have four new Effin' Birds projects and three calendar formats coming out in the next 18 months. Details in the replies, publication dates subject to change —

Ben Kingsley’s birth name is Khrishna Pandit Bhanji, and yet I have seen his casting as Gandhi being described as whitewashing a number of times!
I went to Alaska in 2007 for 10 days and I'm told there's only three photos to prove it. That's just crazy! Well, here's one of those pictures, taken in Juneau. Luckily, I hear there are plans to go back next year with promises of more photos than I'll know what to do with!
Passing the legislature twice with an election in between and then also passing a referendum is common but on the more difficult end of state constitutional amendment methods.
Farewell to Dave Mason, a founding member of Traffic who wrote the immortal “Feelin’ Alright.” My obituary for Rolling Stone.
A reminder while Republicans bitch about Dems finishing the redistricting fight they started: they have full control of gov’t— they can pass a law banning gerrymandering any time they want. They won’t. Republicans aren’t mad gerrymandering exists; they’re mad that they’re not the only ones using it.
The Onion wants to make us submissive slaves to the New world order.
Correct.
Phoeo of a cute cat behind a super market toy set looking at the camera, with the silly caption of "Khajiit has wares if you have coin" which is a known The Elder Scrolls line.

This is a senator L. Louise Lucas appreciation post
it is very funny how these people are so accustomed to essentially bullying democratic politicians that they meltdown when met with appropriate pushback.
in any case, the process to amend the virginia constitution has multiple stages where, at any point, an amendment can be defeated.
"What's the fairest way to draw congressional districts, just as a general policy" is a question with about as much relevance is "is it polite to tackle someone bodily" when that person is running at a crowd with a knife
The right wing crash outs over VA are wild, an entire party that has internalized “our wins are always legit and theirs are not, ever”
Stop privatizing space.
as it becomes clear that Yes has won in VA and gerrymandering will pass, a message to Republican voters:
you brought this on yourselves
you convinced the most fairness-obsessed, That Wouldn’t Be Fair-minded voters in the country to affirmatively vote to put you in the dumpster
you earned this
I'm sure Alito is fuming about the Virginia vote and itching to strike down the rest of the Voting Rights Act as petty revenge.
But Democrats are likely retaking the House, maybe the Senate, no matter what SCOTUS does now.
Killing the VRA would just be a final insult that speeds court reform.
Hot take: the open fuck you energy of 10-1 did better than 9-2 would have. L. Louise Lucas was right. Soft-pedaling it wouldn't have sold, "you're goddamn right we are" did.
Give me a fucking break. Dark thoughts? Relationship stress? This was a domestic violence mass murder. He was a family annihilator.
Connecting some dots here: the Associated Press offered buyouts to ~120 US journalists this month, and among the reasons is that McClatchy dropped AP in 2024. This is a piece of what McClatchy is doing instead.

JUST IN: A federal judge has tossed a defamation lawsuit Kash Patel brought against former FBI official / pundit Frank Figliuzzi.
Figliuzzi’s claim that Patel spent more time in nightclubs than at FBI HQ was “rhetorical hyperbole,” the judge rules.

A Black Turnstone walking across bright green surfgrass exposed at low tide. This is a dark brown shorebird with a dark chest, a white belly and brown legs. It has black eyes and a short, pointed black bill.
Four baby Killdeer chicks standing in a gravel lot. These are extremely fluffy baby shorebirds with long legs and short bills. Their backs are mottled brown, their bellies are bright white, and they have black markings across their chest and eyes.
A White-lined Dirona swimming over sand This is a nudibranch with a whitish, semi-translucent body and broad leaf-like projections across its body that are edged in white.
A male Common Yellowthroat singing while perched on a small branch. The vapor of his breath is just visible above him. This is a yellow songbird with a bright yellow throat and a black mask over the front of his face. He has a contrasting white stripe just above this mask, and a small, sharp black bill.
I am verrrrrryyyyy tentatively back, bsky. Do not make me regret this.
Have some recent photos :)
My thinking re: Virginia gerrymander is that there is one party that supports banning partisan gerrymanders and there is one party that opposes banning partisan gerrymanders and anyone who tries to obscure that fact is attempting to actively mislead you, and should never be listened to on anything
Remember, Democrats have repeatedly advanced measures to ban partisan gerrymandering and Republicans have voted against them time after time.
This is the game Republicans wanted to play. OK, then.
