Long thread to say: there are very real and insidious ways that even well-meaning white folks—clients AND fellow SWers—make it hard for ppl like me. One such way is the lack of acknowledgement of barriers Black SWers face + lack of efforts to address them.

So yeah, it is fucking maddening being a Black SWer. Bc ppl will hold up the success of individual Black SWers as a way to dismiss the very real challenges we face. But then they also ignore the awful and traumatic shit those individuals had to go through to get where they are!

Clients are biased (and when they’re not, they’re often fetishizing you in a way that feels dehumanizing). Dungeons are biased. Social media algorithms are biased. Law enforcement is not just biased but disproportionately targeting you.

SWers are already in an extremely precarious situation—the risk of physical harm, incarceration, doxxing + social death, unstable income, lack of health insurance and discrimination by healthcare providers, etc.

Generational wealth, largely built on the labor of enslaved Africans stolen from their homelands, correlates to better health/educational/economic outcomes. Look at Katrina, look at COVID. White folks have a safety net in the form of assets from homeownership, stocks, retirement savings plans, etc.

The average white family has 10x more wealth than the average Black family in America. White college grads have over 7x more wealth than Black college grads.
