Scholars and activists are invited to send short reflection pieces on political ecology in the run-up for POLLEN24 to JPE/Grassroots, Ecología Política, and the Journal of the Geographical Association of Tanzania (JGAT). More info here: grassrootsjpe.org/view/resourc...

Carbon, Capture, & Storage is not really something for oil & gas producers (other than storage infrastructure).
The ones who need CCS the most, like cement, steel, waste, etc, are not the oil & gas industry (in case you had not noticed).

World will not meet 2C warming target, climate change experts agree This article is more than 14 years old Guardian poll reveals almost nine out of 10 climate experts do not believe current political efforts will keep warming below 2C David Adam, environment correspondent Tue 14 Apr 2009 01.01 CEST 145 Almost nine out of 10 climate scientists do not believe political efforts to restrict global warming to 2C will succeed, a Guardian poll reveals today. An average rise of 4-5C by the end of this century is more likely, they say, given soaring carbon emissions and political constraints. Such a change would disrupt food and water supplies, exterminate thousands of species of plants and animals and trigger massive sea level rises that would swamp the homes of hundreds of millions of people. The poll of those who follow global warming most closely exposes a widening gulf between political rhetoric and scientific opinions on climate change. While policymakers and campaigners focus on the 2C
This survey from 2009 is really a wild read. Most climate scientists surveyed thought 4-5C by end of century was the most likely, and that 2C was close to impossible to achieve.
Imagine the results if you took this exact survey again today....

“Just five rich global north countries are responsible for the majority (51%) of planned new oil and gas extraction to 2050: the US, Canada, Australia, Norway and the UK. These countries have the responsibility to move first to phase out fossil fuel production.”

Impossible to describe these deals as anything other than extremely worrying

How can we build a broad coalition for climate action and bring about the massive political movement needed?
1. Focus on planting a seed of desire for a post carbon world.
2. Avoid doom and fear narratives.
3. Avoid narratives of sacrifice or degrowth.
4. Avoid blaming, shaming, or finger pointing.
Just revisiting this interview with Dr Saleemul Huq, recorded in March 2022.
I think he shows quite well how gross it can be sometimes when white people dismiss COP as a total irrelevancy, when it is still a valuable place to fight these battles on loss, damage, adaptation and accountability.
Just 1% of global population are regular flyers; they represent 50% of climate pollution from flights. (That was me until 2012!) For regular flyers, it's the biggest slice of your climate footprint.
How to start flying less personally, at work, collectively:

netflix offsets nearly all of their emissions
Probably the least surprising but perhaps still the most egregious / shameless is their net zero claims being 100% "net" and 0% "zero"
All these offsets come from questionable projects, too - some worse than others.

Consider submitting to Journal of Political Ecology - no fees and run entirely on academic labour:) One of the editors, Simon Batterbury, has also a long list of decent open access journals here, simonbatterbury.wordpress.com/2015/10/25/l...
The world is vastly off track for meeting essential climate goals, and in a worrying and unexpected plot twist, climate advocates are now careening toward a terrible mistake that could set back climate action by decades. To win on climate, humanity must mobilize trillions of dollars in private green investment, particularly in emerging economies where greenhouse gas emissions are skyrocketing. Unfortunately, despite the urgency of the problem, some of the very groups seeking to accelerate climate action are poised to choke off one of the largest sources of climate finance for the developing world: the global voluntary carbon market (VCM). The private sector is ready to do its part to finance climate action in the developing world. Over the past few years, thousands of global companies have voluntarily committed to achieve net-zero emissions by mid-century. Many companies are taking steps to meet their targets and are prepared to invest far more. Of course companies should deliver s
This is a tacit acknowledgement that offsets aren't a generous gift from corporations to climate action: they are a trade. The company pays a fee, and they get to scribble out as much of their climate responsibility as they please.
