Yeah I personally think the Venus debate is proof that it would be good to move away from gases as biosignatures. To make any meaningful conclusion, ground sampling will be necessary.
Likely no biosignature method is ever going to stand by itself, but right now there is a lot of great research going into very useful directions that go further than just depending on a specific molecule.
The H2O/ O2 argument was connected to habitability for other planets...very earth centric!
Also why are we assuming "life as we know it" on exoplanets? Tbh I would find that depressingly boring!
Listened to some exoplanet talks today and since then a little voice in my head is screaming.
Water is not a biosignature...and neither is oxygen. They both can have abiotic sources.
How robust are experimental Assembly Theory estimations regarding instrument settings, concentration and processing?
