Department of Conservation proposes 130 job cuts It is the latest government department to learn its fate as part of cost cutting measures.

Stoats, ferrets, rats, feral cats and dogs, mice, possums, and landlords thank this govt for throwing them a lifeline...

A newspaper editor — Chris Quinn of the Cleveland Plain Dealer — says it as clearly as he can:

"Our Trump reporting upsets some readers, but there aren’t two sides to facts." www.cleveland.com/news/2024/03...

Quinn writes of a different kind of access. Access to our own eyes and ears:

The thing about Chris Finlayson is even when you disagree with him - I do pretty frequently - he's just obviously a person of basic decency and extreme competence. And absolutely no time for bullshit. And he's simply right; the anti Maori folks are just weirdos and ACT in govt is empowering them.

Why we cannot let the disability support changes happen Opinion - I was hopeful about the future. This is not what that future looks like. This is a massive step backwards into the past, Henrietta Bollinger writes.

David Seymour slams free school lunches scheme as 'wasteful' as fate to be considered by Coalition Government | Newshub "One thing I will say is we will not be spending $350 million because we just can't afford it right now."

"The study found students who missed a meal even just once a week scored much lower than their peers who never went hungry, showing they were two to four years behind in their learning."

Me again, with a screenshot of the National-NZFirst-ACT government's draft policy statement on transport, under Minister Simeon Brown. The screenshot shows the language under the Walking and Cycling activity class for funding, spelling out that it is for the purpose of investing in walking and cycling "where there is either clear benefit for increasing economic growth or" and this is the killer bit, literally, "clear benefit for improving safety where demonstrated volumes of pedestrians and cyclists ALREADY EXIST." In other words, if nobody (or very few people) are currently feeling okay about walking and cycling in a given street or neighbourhood, too bad, this government evidently expects to lock that situation in.

This is the bit I keep coming back to.

If your streets are currently too dangerous to, say, walk to a bus stop or bike to school, Simeon says they must stay that way. 🤷

Hard not to see this as a war on children, the elderly, disabled people – and literally *everyone* trying to get out of traffic.🤯

Admiting you're U-turning because the issue is bad press and not because it's the right thing to do doesn't exactly mitigate the bad press, does it.

A lovely healing day in Wellington yesterday. Got to see an Eagle Ray, and pod of dolphins in the harbour as well as buskers and many people on the waterfront. Helped overcome #fomo from writers week and the arts festival 🤩

This graph is nothing short of alarming

Measles is extremely infectious
We need ~95% vaccinated to give herd immunity
It will tear through communities with these vax rates leaving a trail of sickness, long term health problems and death in its wake

Pls make sure your kids are vaccinated!

Yep. Wearing a snug fitting N95 indoors or in close contact with others is simple prudence.

Medical experts appeal for select committee scrutiny of smokefree law changes A group representing doctors has written to the government, urging it to change its mind on ditching reforms.

Look at that! All these lefty doctors 🙄
9000 doctors! (no idea we had so many) I’ll say is pretty unanimous!

I’m in the same boat just now so lots of smoothies (can put nuts, protein powders, peanut butter and spinach etc in) and soups on the cooler days. Also banana bread or gingerbread maybe if she can manage those.

When NZ went into lockdown in countries with rising deaths (from community cases) there were not yet apparent slowdowns in deaths, only increases.

When NZ went into lockdown in countries with rising deaths (from community cases) there were not yet apparent slowdowns in deaths, only increases.

As there is local uptick in "covid isn't real" / "didn't need to lockdown in 2020" conspiracy w. enquiry news, this is the international state March 2020 when NZ acted. Overwhelmed overseas hospitals not shown, but from week 8 countries that had 5 weeks deaths by week 14 had +200% mortality & rising
