New rule: absolute limit of 1 settings screen per web app. If you need 5 menu items and a structure to manage navigation across your app's hundreds of settings, you done screwed up. 1 page. Giant list of settings. That's all you get. Simplify as needed to get there.
I wonder if LLMs for coding will trigger a resurgence of Literate Programming or something similar. Where key context/prompt details will live alongside the source code. I could image a workflow where a person edits those and then there's an AI skill "update code to match".
And speaking of NPM (which GitHub owns), postinstall.js is a decision worth reconsidering. So is "always download the latest version of all dependencies". The justification was to push the latest security fixes immediately, but more often these days it pushes the latest malware immediately instead.
Chat, should I fly to NJ just to play sax on one gig with a Yacht Rock cover band?
Jargon proposal: bburr (pronounced like Bieber/Beeber) for breakfast burrito. 🌯
Calendaring software should exclusively be written by scheduling sickos in polycules.
If you're under the age of 54, you've never seen a picture of the earth taken with you on it.
There is no form I’m less interested in filling out than literally anything that pops up after I’ve just hit the “unsubscribe” button. Read the room please.
Sometimes I wonder if working from home for so long has turned me into a goblin who cannot be trusted to interact with other people without making it weird. Then I remember that I have always been a goblin who cannot be trusted to interact with other people without making it weird.
For April Fool’s Day I did an instagram thing and dipped Brussels sprouts in chocolate and sprinkles and left them out when my kids got home saying they were cake pops
Oldest kid was predictably betrayed but younger kid actually loved it, ate the whole thing, and went back for seconds wtf
Normalize the pretzel necklace not just for beer festivals - any time you want to snack on some pretzels.
We've slipped into a place where every UI now puts all actions inside menus. Please don't do this. Give the primary actions in your UX buttons directly in the main UI. I expect any day now youtube is going to move the pause button into a hamburger menu.
It's systems design. It's understanding the purpose of a system that you build and making sure that system is accessible and not byzantine.
My most favorable position re: AI coding tools is that it will empower humanists to replace technologists.
But I'm not that hopeful given the hype.
I think military or not, all fires, especially of property not intended to be burned, have lots unsafe stuff. Just ash itself. Batteries. Paint. Etc etc.

I haven't touched MuseScore (music notation program) since before covid and wow it has gotten so much better since then. Pretty great these days.

I got some of the new transitions eyeglasses from zenni and they are working pretty well for me. Tint is mild so I can still see when walking from sunlight to indoors and they change fast enough.
is there a polymarket for Github reaching zero nines?
Not quite that fancy. It's just a cup holder and hopefully spill likelihood reducer. The mug is vacuum insulated though so coffee stays hot for a really long time.
The dockerfile COPY command was forged in bizzaroland and I will never understand how we got from "we need a way to indicate which files are needed" to where they landed. Should we just list the files? Should we follow conventions from cp or tar? Nope. Just full weirdo.
I've been using Zed instead of VScode for a few months.
Here's my experience 🧵
I have an old bandmate that we used to joke about whenever he met a new person his script was "Do you like King Crimson?" and if they replied yes "want to be friends?".
That's me now but for Angine de Poitrine.
People is roles adjacent to engineering firing up claude code and offering their first PR, but shifted from tech startup to Lord of the Rings:
I'd like to help. I have this shiny sword. I see no one is assigned to the "Oruk-Hai" ticket. Maybe I could take that one?
