On a Rail is genuinely a drag, up to Xen I find the game's pace is largely really snappy though otherwise.

I really love its sense of scale and its use of, effectively, the game equivalent of miniatures to handle a lot of it. Its shifting styles of gameplay, from running around the city and canals to the boat and buggy stuff to ravenholm and the rebellion. It just feels like its in service to kinda. eh.

It was a huge thing at the time I genuinely enjoyed but there was no aspect of it that ever really grabbed me. It helped set off an explosion in how action games could play and express themselves and also feels like it takes place in an over exposed world of cardboard sets with cardboard people.

idk why exactly but I'll often get the urge to replay half-life 1 and run it by my friends but I just. never get that way for 2. 2 has such big memorable set pieces and I never feel much of an urge to run through it again. I both liked the game and didn't like it at the same time. #puppetposting
