Been having some fun evaluating Claude Code by making it build some of the pet projects I never had time for. One of them is actually already in a pretty good state: a Swift implementation of the Infocom game engine & compiler: alanquatermain.me/programming/...

It’s surprisingly liberating to be told to one’s face that those closest to you are could rather you not be there any more
I’m particularly proud of the papers, on code injection & dynamic patching: alanquatermain.me/assets/paper..., on OS X internals: alanquatermain.me/assets/paper..., and a proposed standard for lightweight content protection on ebooks: alanquatermain.me/assets/paper...
I’ve recently unearthed a treasure trove of papers and presentations I’d forgotten about while doing immigration paperwork. I’ve added several to my website, and anyone here who knew me around 2010-2013 might recognize some of them. See them on alanquatermain.me any time.
I no longer have any hope that I’ll be able to continue the career trajectory I’ve been pursuing diligently for my entire working life. One step below director level, and the rug has been pulled.

Photograph of a brushed metal plaque mounted on a polished black plastic frame. The plaque bears the heading “United States Patent” and bears the abstract text or a patent, a selection of images from that patent, and the official seal of the United States Patent and Trademark Office alongside the legal phrase granting the patent. The title area reads: “Granted on August 22 2017; James C. Dovey; Patent number 9,742,977; CAMERA REMOTE CONTROL; Assignee: Apple, Inc., Cupertino CA.”
Aww yeah. Took a hot minute, but my patent plaque has finally landed.
Not only might this be the best thing I’ve seen all year, but it perfectly encapsulates what I love about being a musician. This is what I live for: the feeling of taking one small piece to build, ideas begetting ideas, fed by the joy of finding the music in the air.
