A European Common Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) exhibiting the "disruptive" pattern. It is sitting on some black pebbles that are about as big as the cuttlefish. There a some light brown pebbles to the side. The cuttlefish is facing away from the camera. The cuttlefish is showing a pattern that contains white square in the middle of its mantle. The rest of its skin is a mix of dark and light brown that looks like sand.

So cool to see a cuttlefish mimicking a pancake

A bigfin squid (genus Magnapinna) swimming above the deep sea floor. Its head, mantle and upper arms look like a typical squid, but it has two massive fins that are much larger than its body, and its lower arms are long, thin tendrils that are several times the length of the rest of the squid. Its lower arms look like strings dragging behind. The squid is a pale beige with white lower arms and slightly translucent fins. The seafloor is a mix of sediment and sediment covered rocks.

Bigfin squids (genus Magnapinna) have a reputation for being eldritch looking creatures, but that's mostly from some low res footage where they are just floating with their arms dangling.

When you get see them swimming, they look like a regular squid shaped squid, if you ignore their noodley arms.

Tomorrow IRL markets in Philly start, which means a bunch of squid facts shop items will sell out!

We have a few Biology is Bigger than Binaries shirts (designed by @franzanth.bsky.social) left. They're comfy & colors printed great!

Once they're gone that's it.

Get 'em now:

We do! Tsunemi Kubodera got some footage and photos of a giant in its natural habitat back in I want to say 2004.

Humboldt squid can be quite aggressive, but the chances of being attacked by them are minimal... giant squids and colossal squids even less so :)

It's always a good feeling when you believe that you have solved a mystery that's been bugging you for a long time haha. Whatever this club belongs to (from the dead individual) is likely the same as the live one seen back in 2024! Believe it to be "B. riisei" but we shall see :)

White graphic of a giant pacific octopus against a foamy sea. Text bubble above their head that reads “join my discord!” Text below the bubble reads “a place for ceph lovers and aspiring teuthologists” link in bio (or in the text). Yellow sparkles adorn the sides

I know that this is typically strictly a cephalopod page, however, every so often there is something I have never seen before but have looked forward to seeing for the first time!

I am immediately switching from squids to studying this little handsome helpful man!

Probably not… but it could be. So many theories of what it is and what it’s doing!

We don’t think so… but it’s completely possible.

And also… yes why the hell does it have to look like that!!! Such an inappropriate squid species!!!

A slide showing 4 different squid, zooming in on their dick-arm, which each have what looks like little dicks coming off of them. Each is labeled with a different location and the mantle length. Nature is so beautiful.

Austin @brachioteuthis.bsky.social is talking about brachioteuthids (a type of deep sea 🦑 ).

He’s trying to figure out how we can more easily tell the difference between species.

He taught us about some …unique! suction cup morphology. Just on the males, on the hectocotylus, they have a…um. EPS.

Thank you so much Sarah!! We really hope that if not for my PhD… maybe a postdoc we can figure out their arm modifications!
