the Destiny franchise has 10 years of guns to pick from and the lever action yeehaw exotic Dead Man’s Tale feels better than all of them (also does more damage as you successfully land consecutive shots on squishy weak points)

I suspect this won’t change until more of the 90s/00s venture capital gold rush C suite guys leave the industry since they have a vested interest (literally!) in maintaining this perception

but at least they’re finally starting to leave, slowly

the dualsense haptics were one of the highlights for me and still a high water mark overall (better than a lot of Sony’s own first party offerings imo), also impressive that they had it 99% working day 1 in the PC release

I dunno, I felt like the sparse actual full on action shooter sections in Deathloop were easily some of the worst parts of that game, it still felt very built around the Dishonored structure of “if you’re in an outright fight with more than 1 guy something has gone very wrong”

Sony’s general approach to indies at the time was really awkward yeah, they were just kinda throwing indie devs at the wall to play catch-up with Microsoft and Valve’s more developed indie catalogs

Dice was very quick to respond to feedback on 5, it was…awkward on launch like most newer BF games but they had it sorted out in months vs the years + DLC packs it took for some of the previous games, but not tying fixes to a visible marketing cycle was seemingly too low-profile to change minds

Redfall had some good ideas, I gave it a shot at the time and mostly found that it had a lot of little problems that made it feel off in a way general audiences wouldn’t like (aiming/weapon handling was probably the biggest, not sure Arkane was quite ready to make a full speed action shooter)

Cyberpunk (the Mike Pondsmith ttrpg setting) is just kind of a mishmash of stuff, outside of NC there’s Mad Max warlords getting in scraps with each other and the corporations

Judge Dredd has a similar thing so it is formative-ish (and there was a lot of cross pollination with 2000AD and Mad Max)

even just having multiple smaller decks you can cycle through would make a meaningful difference imo, so would having the standard KH mp bar

people really threw the baby out with the bathwater there i think, as an input method it’s way less clunky than the shortcut/menu system in the mainline games it just needed better consolidation and more restrictions on how and what you can use

almost all of your actual moveset utility is also on the busted CDs so not using them mostly just means mashing attack and dodge to play the game like witcher 3

there’s an opportunity to just swerve away from established trilogy characters and plotlines and mayyyybe tell an interesting story in there but we already know from what little they’ve shown that they aren’t going to do that

there’s like a 95% chance Mass Effect 4 (5?) does this too and it might just be what puts Bioware 6 feet under

real dingle cherry on the industry shit sundae to get hit with an announcement for product placement shoved into an ai-smeared remake of a 25 year old game while thousands of people are getting laid off

even accounting for hardware sales pushed by gta6 itself it’s gonna need like a 1 in 4/5 attach rate launch quarter to hit those metrics. There’s what? 95 million ps5s out there right now? I guess also a couple dozen xboxes

maybe they’re holding out for a next gen/pc bump? hard to square the circle

yeah if I had to pick out something that really felt like a before and after moment rather than an iterative step from king’s quest et al. it would probably have to be Myst, many innovative things branched from it in a multitude of directions in a way they never did with lucasarts/sierra

of course that doesn’t matter because only the smear headlines do, but it’s nuts that the media can produce a mountain from the smallest molehill

even taken on its face the chappell stuff is so transparently nothing, like the actual byline is “venue security she never hired did something she had nothing to do with”

the pandemic might have spooked them for a while but they emerged fairly resilient from both that and the more recent global economic downturns, and if they can weather that, why keep spending money on diversifying?

Sony’s answer seems to be that their hardware and services revenue is making money hand over fist, and when you look at it in that framing it makes a lot of sense to pull back from investing resources into things like PC and mobile where they see none of that revenue
