the mortal terror humans (correctly) had of the darkness of night, pre- electric light bulb, I don't think that's depicted very often. the one example I thought of was Chabrol's LES FANTOMES DU CHAPELIER, where a slasher's victims would simply wander away from the gaslight and kkrrkkk that was that

What Did Ancient Humans Do at Night? YouTube video by Zenn

I dunno, normally I look askance at videos like this but it's pretty persuasive and, as near as I can figure, free of crankery

(also I'm appreciating hand-drawn stuff in vids more and more, for some reason lol)

heh I like his look in TRUE GRIT, it's ideal for a lawman who's introduced as self-satisfied and presuming but ultimately proves himself a decent and fearless man. which, in keeping with the story's theme: those with True Grit don't always look or behave the way you'd expect.

the Spielberg caused BLACKKKLANSMAN to get bumped, and that says something because Lee's film is one of his best, and one of the very best of '18. Its runner-up status, for me, speaks well of the strength of films that year.

A review of Alyonka (1962) Alyonka. It’s very pleasing visually: Barnet is of the wide-angle school, and likes the effect of space falling away in the distance. (Though the pictorialism doesn’t inhibit him from panning quickly,...

posted up notes from @sallitt.bsky.social on one of the most wonderful of all Soviet films, Boris Barnet's ALYONKA. If you ever have the opportunity to see this, take it.

I really like about 40-45% of this movie: basically anything where it feels like Ritchie had a say. Then there's the rest of it, very handsome and not badly made but the kind of pre-viz stuff that excludes a film director.

Something I didn't expect in a million years? His ALADDIN is quite enjoyable

the one hitman declaring "We're good" after they've finished with Arthur, the hardest those two words ever went in a movie.

but also I'm pretty sure she gets immediately 86'd on her attempt like all her other colleagues so whatever idea she had was a big BZZZZT

also there's a moment I like late in the film when Spielberg pushes in on a girl on Sorrento's brain trust and it looks like she's having "I might be onto something here" thoughts, I just like it. she's my friend. I'll assume her name is Stacey, or Nicole

you know initially I was going to pop in another movie besides READY PLAYER ONE, thinking, yeah, I still like it a lot but I'm not hurting anyone if I dip after the THE SHINING sequence and the very first thing is the reveal of the "Sixers" being absolutely horrified by the same game challenge lol
