more importantly what does this even have to do with "sincerity" ? seems more like we're just tired of the same joke? at least people interpret it as a joke but maybe there are different reasons to write that way, like not being boring (but not quite figuring out an interesting way to do that).

Is irony like the engine of all humor? Sometimes I laugh at the same shit for 10 years and other times I get tired of a joke after 1 day. If I expect a marvel hero to be "unexpectedly" down-to-earth does it stop being ironic or is it ironic if they go back to being lofty and stoic? not really

I dont even think I've ever heard a professional writer talk about this phenomenon at all. Like ok it's annoying that every character talks like "errrmmm well that just happened" now but that kind of speech has more in common with how real people talk than like, a Disney movie from the 1970's

Havent heard a critique of modern movie/tv/game dialog or humor that I really agree with. Seems like "sincerity" is the big idea everyone settled on but I think the explanation is kind of weak. At the very least it hasn't been explained thoroughly

My friend's 20y/o brother told me being at my apartment and watching me play the tony Hawk remake a few years ago is now a core memory for him, and now he's collecting copies of the old games on every old console. To think I had that kind of power

they should make a movie called "the bathrooms" where there;s a guy wandering around the backrooms looking for a bathroom but he can never find one. then scientists find a way in and try to build one but they fail and are banished to the crackrooms

yeah I hadn't seen the original 4chan post in a long time so I didn't remember they had already injected monster stuff and "noclipping" into it. I guess my brain just ignored all that because it was so much less interesting than the eerie pictures were by themselves

doesn't really give the same type of subtle unease as the other liminal stuff I was talking about but it seems like it's got it's own thing going on, at least as a puzzle game. idk about the movie

Dale Cooper should have brought a film crew and some scientists into the black lodge

you're not gonna like this but I made this tweet right after watching a few of his videos lol. I don't think they're very evocative at all. they're even framed as a bunch of data that people collected "here's footage we found" "here's all the movement we recorded" etc.

break convention and have the rooms populated with strangers who act completely normal about everything. the rooms start out normal and only gradually get more nonsensical and maze-like. really channel the feeling of being 5 years old and walking up to the wrong family at chuck-e-cheeses

i feel like to do the idea any justice as a movie you'd have to get really experimental with it and commit to just leading the audience through a bunch of purely evocative imagery. like a kid wanders away from their birthday party at the gymnastics place and you just watch them explore for 2 hours

I thought the main appeal of "the backrooms" and liminal spaces was just kinda looking at photos of uncanny, repetitive transitory environments. when did they turn this into like a haunted house thing with monsters and hazmat suits and secret government science experiments
