New @healthaffairs.bsky.social paper on how CMS can integrate formal aspects of #HTA, much of which is patterned after @icer-review.bsky.social practices! Many thanks to @commonwealthfund.org for their support. @basucally.bsky.social @leah-rand.bsky.social

Very thoughtful study and important results to show how cost-sharing of drugs directly affect mortality… and why, if and when, we get the price of drugs right, there shouldn’t be any need of cost sharing..

I know a lot is going on right now, but presuming CMS continues to allow its data to be used for research, this VRDC transition is happening at some point.

We’re experiencing perhaps the worst flu season in 25 years, with severe cases also rising, and young children and seniors faring the worst. One in six of all ER visits in the 0-17 age groups are now for influenza.

🚨 How does physician altruism shape ties to the pharma industry? 🚨

@basucally.bsky.social, Jing (jingliuw.wixsite.com/mysite) & I link experimental and admin data to show that less altruistic physicians receive higher industry payments and respond more to financial incentives in prescribing:

HHS spent $33B is funding (98%NIH) in 2023. With current average indirect rate of 30%, seems like a $4B funding shock coming to universities in the US!

I return, I hope total NIH budget is raised by at least that much & certain F&A items allowed to be budgeted under direct costs with justification!

And don’t be fooled by the fact the NH industry runs on a thin profit margin. Ashvin Gandhi and Andrew Olenski’s excellent work shows how NH industry tunnels nearly 70% of its profits and keeps them hidden!!

Opinion | Nursing Homes Owe More to Their Residents New rules requiring increased staffing and care are under attack.

Thoughtful opinion piece in the NY Times by Rachel Werner and Norma Coe at @pennldi.bsky.social on the reason we want the proposed nursing home staffing regulations to be upheld. The industry is fighting to have them rescinded, which is not good for our loved ones.

Frustrated by medical bills and phone trees? AI might help | Op-Ed Artificial intelligence could be a way forward to help patients and providers in our frustrating health care system.

Ended 2024 with my reflection on the admin hassles patients face everyday in the US health system and a call for gen AI solutions to prioritize patients (rather than profits). I have many more thoughts than ~700 words allow, but hope it's a conversation starter.
