In a crowded Ten Forward, Will Riker stands in the middle of the room playing his trombone. To the right is Zoot of the Electric Mayhem playing along on saxophone. Beverly Crusher is standing just behind Riker looking impressed. A man in civilian clothing is just behind her looking like he is very much enjoying the entertainment. Geordi La Forge is standing to the far right, arms crossed as he listens to the duo.

Voice actors fight to save their livelihoods and local cultures from Hollywoodโ€™s AI push Voice AI tools are quickly replacing voice-over and dubbing artists, raising concerns not only about jobs but also loss of cultural relevance in non-English-speaking nations.

While international markets generate two-thirds of Hollywoodโ€™s revenue, voice actors in countries like Brazil and India are fighting AI tools that could "annihilate" their work restofworld.org/2026/ai-voice-actors-hol...

Two hooded figures with lamps approach a moonlit, isolated cottage.
A woman answers the door.
We have come for the child, says the hooded figure
So soon? she asks
It is time, says the hooded figure.
The woman is distraught. We should never have got him a library card!
What is done cannot be undone, says the hooded figure
We couldnโ€™t see the harm! We just wanted him to enjoy reading!
For most, it ends there, says the hooded figure, turning away and walking into the wilderness
Oh lord, What have I done! says the woman,
the child walks past her and out into the darkness with them.
Do not cry mother.
I am a writer now.

Opening text of a thread by Palantir from X
Because we get asked a lot.

The Technological Republic, in brief.

1. Silicon Valley owes a moral debt to the country that made its rise possible. The engineering elite of Silicon Valley has an affirmative obligation to participate in the defense of the nation.

2. We must rebel against the tyranny of the apps. Is the iPhone our greatest creative if not crowning achievement as a civilization? The object has changed our lives, but it may also now be limiting and constraining our sense of the possible.

3. Free email is not enough. The decadence of a culture or civilization, and indeed its ruling class, will be forgiven only if that culture is capable of delivering economic growth and security for the public.

4. The limits of soft power, of soaring rhetoric alone, have been exposed. The ability of free and democratic societies to prevail requires something more than moral appeal. It requires hard power, and hard power in this century will be built on software.

Palantir put out a 22-point summary of their CEO's book The Technological Republic. It's pitched as a defence of the West, but if you read it through the VDA framework, verification, deliberation, accountability, what it's actually doing looks rather different.

You're right about Jim being the St Hubbins character in the band (www.tom-cox.com/jim/) but really it's Charles who takes the Nigel role.

Had almost forgotten about that one time the water plant got smoked by lightening and I had to flush hydrants.

Almost.

Thanks to everyone sharing kind words and your own stories of loss and hope.

Iโ€™m eternally grateful for the time I had with her and for the science that will give more time to others.

She made me feel so loved, and all I wish for everyone in the world is to feel the same.

I am not interested in being a person on Instagram, doing collaborative posts with people or filming myself talking to the camera. I want to be a person who fucks off away from the noise and works hard and writes better and better books for the rest of his life and then dies. Why is that not ok?
