text conversation between me and a man with whom I am close irl. we are exchanging comments regarding an image of the UGA women's tennis team taken when they attended the NCAA Collegiate National Champions Day at the White House. The women are standing in a tight group, behind President Trump and 5 other men. The men are spread out in front of the raised platform the on which the women stand. The platform barely elevates the women. The men dominate the composition of the photo; their bodies all but obscure the women they are supposedly there to honor. The man with whom I am texting does not find any issue with the arrangement. In answer to my prompt: see if you can find the members of the UGA women's tennis team in this pic. He replies: They're around the President? I respond: "around" is doing some heavy lifting in your sentence. He replies: I guess. It's an unusual set up. The conversation continues in the same manner. I point out what I consider to be the obviously poor optics, and he explains why it's a simple and easily imagined logistical constraint, and thus any criticism is meaningless.
