These days we have Jordi in Taiwan at the “Species on the Move” congress, presenting on how climate change is affecting the global distribution of barren grounds (caused by sea urchins)

👩🏻🔬 Next Thursday we’re starting the challenge of locating marine forests in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, together with Observadores del Mar
Don’t miss it! 🙌🏽

So we keep moving forward, building connections for the future of science! 🌐👩🏻🔬
And with a bit of envy for the great trip these two had! Going to conferences is always an extra dose of energy to come back to work fully recharged! 🍻🔋

Within EuroMarine, OYSTER (Orienting Young Scientists of EuroMarine) is an initiative aimed at representing, connecting and supporting early-career researchers. @em-oyster.bsky.social
All of this thanks to CEAB @ceabcsic.bsky.social , a research centre that is part of the EuroMarine network! 😊
EuroMarine is a European marine science research network that brings together universities, research centres and scientists to study the oceans and marine ecosystems.
This week Toni and Uxue were in Cádiz meeting with the OYSTER working group and then attending the “Open Science Day” congress of EuroMarine.

🚨People of Blanes and nearby areas!🙌🏽
This Friday we’ll be at the Blanes Town Hall talking about marine forests and how to cultivate seaweed. Don’t miss it!!!
We’re taking advantage of having so many women in our research group to wish you a Happy International Day of Women and Girls in Science! 💜

Tomorrow we’ll be taking part in this tribute to our beloved Marta Sales ❤️
If you don’t want to miss it, we’ll share a link shortly beforehand so you can join us online. Stay tuned! 👀🙌🏽
3️⃣ And finally ‘Cystoseira compressa’. As the name suggests, its branches are flattened, as if they had been pressed, and it also shows spots similar to ‘E. mediterranea’, though less uniform.
📍Photos taken this January at Cala Estreta.

2️⃣ Next one is ‘Ericaria mediterranea’, with more striped and iridescent colours.
Today, to wrap up the week, we’re sharing three stunning macro photos of some Cystoseira species by Francesco Martini 📸💖
1️⃣ First one is ‘Ericaria crinita’. As you can see, it has finger-like branches with rounded, cylindrical tips. Several branches also grow from the same base.

Although we lost him a year ago, his legacy lives on: in the species that bear his name, in the marine spaces he helped preserve, and in all the people who learned from him. Kike was a scientist, a storyteller, and a friend with a global, curious, and free spirit.
🌏 A one-of-a-kind explorer.
which he took part as a member of Pristine Seas. His fieldwork and observational skills were key to establishing scientific baselines on the state of ocean conservation and contributed to the creation and protection of millions of square kilometers of marine protected areas.
A deeply committed and principled naturalist and conservationist. Probably the world’s leading expert on benthic habitats; yet with a vast, encyclopedic knowledge of nature that went far beyond any single discipline.
He was named a Nat Geo Explorer for the more than 30 expeditions worldwide in
Today we have the honor of sharing that Enric “Kike” Ballesteros has been posthumously named a National Geographic Explorer @natgeo.
For us, Kike was our mentor and a guiding figure within the Marine Forest group.
👩🏻🏫 Presentation shown during the event, with very interesting photos and data

This talk is part of the annual conference series organized by Espai Cràter, called ‘The Great Questions of Science’.
We recommend 100% checking out their program—there are many fascinating talks throughout the year! 👀

She explained what marine forests are, what we currently know about them, and the research we are carrying out to conserve and restore them in the Mediterranean 🪸

Last week we kicked off the year with our first conference, led by Alba @verges-alba.bsky.social at Espai Cràter in Olot 👏🏽
Isa is a student who’s been helping us analyse these algae in the UdG labs. These are samples from a 20 × 20 cm square 👩🏻🔬
It’s amazing how much associated biodiversity can exist in such a small space! 🪸

✨ Happy return to work and happy 2026 to everyone! 💪🏽
Today we’re sharing a time-lapse from a study to characterise the habitat of "Cystoseira elegans" in the Medes Islands and Port de la Selva 🔬
