Georgie Romero is a zombie with blue skin, long dark blue hair that's braided, and a large scar on the side of her head. She is wearing a t-shirt, ripped jeans, and sneakers. Art by Jaxon Sorby

If I had the cash to hire a puppet fabricator, I'd 100% animate Georgie dancing in stop-mo. That feels like something I could approach on my own. I tend to get overwhelmed with animating, if I'm being honest.

The argument turned into them having to hide the fact she's a mermaid.
So if you're an actor and you ever had a rehearsal fight in Pasadena about being a mermaid, you did great!

My favorite game to play in LA is "Real Fight or Actors."
You overhear an argument and you can't tell if it's real or not. Last time I played, I thought the couple was really getting into it. I only got tipped off when she screamed, "I can't help that I'm a mermaid, John!"

Thank you, I appreciate that. When audiences say it, I get it to an extent. They don't know the process and don't understand we don't call all the shots.
But seeing other artists say it is like oh, ouch.

I see this a lot in online spaces with people who, understandably, are upset by how they're treated.
Just feeling a bit sore because I saw yet another "screenwriters are bad actually" post. I have been seeing so many posts like this lately along with "writers are the reason everything sucks."

I understand how frustrating it is to have your art belittled and your labor devalued.
But I'm also really sad when people's response to that is to devalue other artists' work and imply they are lesser.

That's a pretty accurate description of them. For a time, I only joined for the mentorship program. Unfortunately, those have limited access and I never qualified, so I stopped applying and let my membership expire.
BnA is great! I also mostly know about them through word-of-mouth.

But when you don't do the lobbying or create those networking opportunities, it's like "Well yeah, why would they give you the money for the infrastructure if you aren't investing in the right things?"
It's a lot of "Maybe if we play nice, the Old Boys will let us in" and it's not working.

I don't disagree, but I think the problem is they're not really bringing in enough money to be sustainable as a nonprofit.
Talking with people in similar orgs, they often need the money for the infrastructure, grants, and the cost of just existing. 1/2

Sadly, this isn't unique to WIA. I'm noticing stuff like this cropping up in all of the women in entertainment groups.
They tend to be too afraid to actually challenge the system + memberships are nosediving. Partially because they don't do much and the industry is falling apart.

It doesn't help that membership across the board is dropping and all these groups are scrambling for money. I think desperation breeds this sort of stuff, too.

I just got this email and almost posted about it, but decided to let it go because I'm tired of this, grandpa.
It falls into the same pitfalls most Women in ___ groups do. The core issue I've found is they don't want to push back against the industry and uproot the current system.

It didn't help that in some shorts, Tom didn't even WANT to go after Jerry. His owner made him.

As a kid, I'm pretty sure I missed the point of the Tom & Jerry and Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoons because I always sided with Tom and Coyote.

I never thought I'd miss the little tyrants.
They were annoying, but the stakes were so low with them. You just went to a new forum or started your own, rather than watch entire internet ecosystems get ravaged by corporations.

Sometimes I'll say that I wish they made more insane, out of pocket movies like they used to, and people will offer movies that are odd, but are still mainstream.
I'm talking weird shit like Warriors of Virtue that people ask "Was that a fever dream?" years later.

Studios laying off hundreds and thousands of employees with the excuse that they can move production to the UK and not have to pay for healthcare because the UK has socialized medicine should be humiliating to the US government.

I'm trying to ask SAG what is the correct paperwork for my pilot to make it a SAG signatory project, and the answer was "IDK have you tried filling out some paperwork about it?"
You're killing me, Smalls.

Right? I've been seeing less of it, thankfully. It's just every now and again, I'll find a grant and when I read the rules, it'll say you can't use it to pay people. When that's usually the part that kneecaps us lol.
Everything else you can kinda fake, aside from insurance.

Every now and again, I stumble on a film grant or something that has a "you can't use this to pay crew" stipulation and it's so weird to me.
That's like 90% of what I need the grant money for. Hell, most crew people already own a lot of the gear you'd otherwise need to rent.
