in the field for #sturgeonsaturday
ive spent the last 2 yrs investigating what is killing BC white sturgeon
unfortunately, these deaths continue & we’ve had over 50 adult sturgeon die in the fraser river in the last ~6 weeks
every fish i sample is another step closer to solving the mystery🧪👩🏻🔬🌎🌐
A brochure of the symposium with salmon filmed under water on the cover and a small eel on the second page. The title of the sympisium is Habitat restoration for diadromous fishes – best practices and impacts on stock assessment. It will be organised in Oulu, Finland, 30 June - 2 July 2026. Please see details on the website.

In the third chapter (second pub) of my thesis, my co-authors & I assessed the stock composition of Atlantic #sturgeon captured in the Restigouche River & estuary (i.e., used genetics to determine where these fish came from). 🧬

This study marks the first genetic characterization of Atlantic sturgeon in the Restigouche region, and will hopefully aid to inform & support the future co-management of these living dinosaurs! 🦕
Special shout out to @carogillis.bsky.social, @shannon-white.bsky.social, and all of my wonderful co-authors for helping me get this one to the finish line! 🙏🏻
LOVE this! This spring, we saw all these birds along the Matapedia River, where we monitored Atlantic salmon daily. Thank you so much for sharing!
How is this bird linked to the biology of streams?
Truly beautiful work!
As an aquatic ecologist, I'm also interested how this bird is linked to🤗

Top panel shows the results of experiment 1 on the behavioural response to conspecific chemical cues. Disturbance cues elicited increased activity in shoals of Blackchin Shiner. Bottom panel shows the results of experiment 2 on the behavioural response to predator odours. Rock bass predator odour elicited increased shelter use in shoals of Blackchin Shiner.

Hey science friends?
I know that many of you are concerned about the perceived neutral and apolitical role of science in decisionmaking.
But scientists are being targeted. We didn't start it.
And advocating *for the role of scientific evidence in policymaking* is not unprofessional advocacy.
One of the real problems is that too many people conveniently believe the opposite of diversity is merit, and the opposite of inclusion is high standards.
Yeah, that’s just not the case.

Forecasting river temperature is likely to become increasingly important in a warming climate, informing management decisions in activities as diverse as electricity generation and angling. Interesting new paper: www.mdpi.com/2306-5338/12...

Earlier this year, Nature asked science-policy specialists which country is particularly good at ensuring science is factored into government decisions. The question mystified many respondents. Some of the responses were: “Not aware of any.” “None have enviable systems.” “Very hard to say.”
