in the field for #sturgeonsaturday

ive spent the last 2 yrs investigating what is killing BC white sturgeon

unfortunately, these deaths continue & we’ve had over 50 adult sturgeon die in the fraser river in the last ~6 weeks

every fish i sample is another step closer to solving the mystery🧪👩🏻‍🔬🌎🌐

Stock composition of cryptic Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) in the Restigouche River and estuary, Canada Scientific Reports - Stock composition of cryptic Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus) in the Restigouche River and estuary, Canada

In the third chapter (second pub) of my thesis, my co-authors & I assessed the stock composition of Atlantic #sturgeon captured in the Restigouche River & estuary (i.e., used genetics to determine where these fish came from). 🧬

This study marks the first genetic characterization of Atlantic sturgeon in the Restigouche region, and will hopefully aid to inform & support the future co-management of these living dinosaurs! 🦕

Organic ligands in whale excrement support iron availability and reduce copper toxicity to the surface ocean - Communications Earth & Environment Whales transform prey biomass into labile micronutrients and inject them directly into the surface ocean, according to chemical analyses of whale excrement samples from the Southern Ocean.

🌊🐋 Whale Poop: The Ocean’s Micronutrient Booster?

Organic ligands in whale feces help keep iron available & reduce copper toxicity in the ocean.

By recycling nutrients, whales support marine ecosystems, something industrial whaling disrupted by 90%

Hey science friends?

I know that many of you are concerned about the perceived neutral and apolitical role of science in decisionmaking.

But scientists are being targeted. We didn't start it.

And advocating *for the role of scientific evidence in policymaking* is not unprofessional advocacy.

One of the real problems is that too many people conveniently believe the opposite of diversity is merit, and the opposite of inclusion is high standards.

Yeah, that’s just not the case.

Groundwater Contribution to River Water Temperature River water temperature serves as a critical indicator of numerous biological and chemical processes essential for ecosystem support and water quality …

Characterising spatially and temporally heterogeneous groundwater and hyporheic exchange processes is extremely challenging. As a result these processes are often poorly represented, ignored or poorly parameterised in process based river temperature models. www.jstage.jst.go.jp/article/ras/...

Advising governments about science is essential but difficult. So train people to do it A great scientist doesn’t necessarily make an effective science adviser — but schooling and practice can help to bridge the gap.

Earlier this year, Nature asked science-policy specialists which country is particularly good at ensuring science is factored into government decisions. The question mystified many respondents. Some of the responses were: “Not aware of any.” “None have enviable systems.” “Very hard to say.”
