Want to know what rural residents really think about clean energy in farm country? Ask them! My colleague Kathiann Kowalski talked to dozens of people involved in this Richland County, Ohio citizens referendum to lift clean energy restrictions:

March 5, 2026 The Honorable Kathy Hochul Governor of New York State NY State Capitol Building Albany, NY 12224 Re: Upholding New York’s Leadership in the Fight Against Climate Change Dear Governor Hochul, At a time when the Trump Administration is doing everything possible to tear down decades of progress in the fight against climate change, it is incumbent on states like New York to reject this new wave of climate denial and put forward bold policies that will save New Yorkers money, reduce pollution, and protect a livable climate for our constituents and our children and grandchildren. That is why we, the undersigned senators, categorically oppose any effort to rollback New York’s nation-leading climate law, the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, and urge you to stand strong in the face of misinformation that seeks to blame the CLCPA for the energy affordability crisis that fossil fuels have created. Climate change remains one of the greatest threats that our constituents - and societies across the globe - have ever faced. New Yorkers are already living through extreme weather events that run the gamut from searing heat waves to Arctic cold snaps, and they are already paying the price1, with their dollars, their homes, their health, and even their lives. The climate crisis is driving up the cost of home insurance, of health care, of groceries, and of countless other daily necessities2, and every delay in taking action will only drive those costs even higher. Confronting this crisis is a generational task and a legacy issue for every elected official, and it is inseparable from any credible effort to address the high cost of living. At the same time, there is no question that we must address energy affordability, capacity, and reliability. But while President Trump and the fossil fuel industry want New Yorkers to believe that we must choose between those needs and climate action, nothing could be further from the truth. The recent three-page memo from…
not include any price guardrails, with a completely unrealistic carbon price34. As such, the analysis simply cannot be treated as a serious contribution to the debate. In reality, rolling back the CLCPA will not save our constituents money because it is not the cause of increasing costs. It is the fossil fuel status quo56 that has created the affordability crisis New Yorkers are now suffering from, and it is bold action to deliver renewable energy and energy efficiency that will give them relief, saving money for individuals in the immediate-term and for all utility customers in the medium- and long-term7. When it comes to energy generation capacity, renewables can be deployed cheaply and quickly to meet our needs8. And over the last year, through heat waves and polar vortexes9, renewables have proven that they add much-needed reliability10 to the grid, reducing price spikes in the process, like those driven by wars in Europe and the Middle East. Between us we carry significant legislation on a broad number of policies large and small that will reduce New Yorkers’ costs and move us toward our science-based climate targets. We stand ready to work with you and your administration to implement comprehensive climate policies that truly meet the needs of this moment – but we cannot support abandoning our commitment to climate progress. 👀 New letter from 29 NYS Senators (>2/3 of the Dem caucus) to Hochul this morning:

I'm pretty sure the ALEC / TPPF folks tried this same "capacity factor" backdoor attack in Texas. But Texas lawmakers were too smart — and too aware of the vitality of solar and batteries for the state's energy reliability and affordability — to bite.

Nicely done, @jeffstjohn.bsky.social, with a useful fact check on Chris Wright: www.canarymedia.com/articles/tra...
Energy Secretary Chris Wright says wind and solar were "a cost center" and "not actually helpful" for the East Coast grid during Winter Storm Fern. He ignored renewables' year-round value, the Texas solar-battery boom, and winter risks to fossil fuels:

Are solar farms in Ohio being denied due to faked local opposition? @canarymedia.com's Kathianne Kowalski does the work of checking the names and addresses — and it sure looks like there are a lot of fabricated "local" opponents to it:

Ohio is poised to block a 94-MW solar farm because of local pushback — even though a substantial number of public comments opposing the installation appear to be fabricated.

Regulatory staff flip-flop, faked comments & other evidence in Ohio's Crossroads Solar case raise big questions about whether local government opposition to renewable energy should trump statewide needs and benefits.

BIG SCOOP @heatmap.news: The Trump administration is now going after renewable energy projects on both public and private lands by indefinitely delaying water permits … on grounds that the projects might have bad “aesthetics”
Yes, they’re hurting renewable energy projects by calling them ugly

Great story by @mariagallucci.bsky.social on how Trump forcing all Department of Interior reviews of clean energy projects to get personal approval from DOI Secretary Doug Burgum has stifled 22GW of development in the midst of an energy crisis:

The Trump administration has sued two small CA cities over their local ordinances prohibiting gas in new construction. But with the state's new building code, it might not matter.

Insane story from @jeffstjohn.bsky.social:
Trump admin has ordered coal plants with inoperable units to stay online, forcing their owners to make costly repairs to facilities that are totally uneconomical to run.
Utility customers will likely bear the costs.

Is the US headed toward an electricity crisis of its own making?
I and several other folks in this article say: yes

Screenshot of an article with the below text: Things are getting messy. President Donald Trump has gutted the only significant decarbonization law the U.S. ever managed to pass. Blue-state governors are backsliding on clean energy goals and easing up on fossil fuels under the cover of affordability. Oil and gas companies have dropped the pretense of caring about climate. ESG is dead. The “climate hawk” is dead. The words “pragmatism” and “realism” have become as inescapable in climate policy discourse as reminders of planetary warming are in the weather reports. Yes, the climate conversation has changed dramatically over the last year, at least in the Western world. But the techno-economic trends that are driving decarbonization forward have not. Clean energy — mostly solar — is still being built at a blistering pace. EVs are beginning to run gas cars off the road. China’s emissions could be starting to decline. The world is on track for far less warming than it was when the Paris Agreement was signed a decade ago, and we’re still in the early innings of clean energy deployment. In 2026, I’ll be watching this dissonance between decarbonization vibes and reality. Will politicians, companies, and others grow increasingly quiet on climate, all while the clean energy revolution speaks louder and louder?
Happy New Year! One big theme I'm watching in 2026 is the increasing gap between energy-transition vibes (bad) and the growth of clean energy (good).

It brings me no pleasure to report that my beat — offshore wind power — skyrocketed to the top of new sites today.
I just published a scoop about Trump's halt on 5 in-progress wind farms capable of powering 2.7 million homes.
Here's a mega🧵
🔗 2nd post is a link to my scoop
🎁 last post is a gift
EXCLUSIVE: I received a copy of the letter sent to developers today halting construction on all 5 offshore wind farms being built in America.
What’s new here is the close “coordination” with the “Department of War” in determining the “risk” poised by these wind farms. And the threat to “cancel.”
Caveats apply, as this data is only through November, but so far, this year, 92% of the new power plants built in the U.S. have been solar/batteries/wind.
92%! In the year Trump tried to destroy clean energy!

We often think, “I’m just one person—what difference could I make?”
This story shows that, when we use our voice, the answer is: a lot.
So if one person can catalyze so much harm, imagine the good each of us can choose to support and advocate for.

In Feb 2023, I attended a climate skeptics conference in Orlando. I was the only reporter.
David Stevenson told me there that the offshore wind industry would “crumble” before it reached South Carolina. And that he was leading the opposition.
I followed him for 3 years and wrote this story.
In case you missed it, check out @danmccarthy.bsky.social’s awesome longform dispatch from Greece about their energy transition. 👇
