This is already demonstrably incorrect. And Wright isn't even dead yet.

Fellas, is it manly to die from vaccine-preventable diseases?
Cuts to international aid, including major reductions by USAID and others, are already reversing progress in some of the world's poorest countries, Ronan Scully of Self Help Africa writes www.advertiser.ie/galway/artic...
There are bottlenecks that can be fixed on a few weeks timetable: adding extra services (closed due to money), ticketing ... if its considered urgent, which it isnt.
From the numbers, we can't simply stop short-haul flights tomorrow. But a policy of replacement with rail is needed ASAP for climate change anyway, and should be accelerated. Simply concentrating on fraction of aviation fuel used misses this.
15% of fossil fuels extracted each year are used to make fertiliser, run farms, process foods and transport them. In a very real sense our food is made from oil and gas.
We are about to feel a very painful food shock.

What matters is overall fuel burnt , and alternatives, rather than fraction of aviation fuel used on short flights.
Short flights can be replaced by rail. The comparison should be fuel for rail vs aviation, especially when rail can be electric. Long flights are less substitutable.

Can we finally agree that burning wood for energy is a terrible idea and won't be carbon neutral, let alone carbon negative, in our lifetimes? BECCS using wood certainly shouldn't qualify as CO₂ removal (CDR).
We published a reply to comment on our recent Temperature Neutrality Paper.
The (very) short version:
If everyone does it, the very assumptions that underpin it are invalidated.

Excellent piece on the #fuelprotests
While the "angry men" were out holding the country to ransom, we didn't hear a word from their populist political supporters about the vulnerable groups they were affecting like older and disabled people.

A dozen or so cars parked on a brand new bike path, Bóthar Stiofáin, Galway. Nearby, an event is being held to mark the unveiling of a plaque commemorating Steven Griffin, an Irish soldier who was killed in Lebanon (1980) while on duty with Unifil.
Utterly predictable — and you couldn't make it up.

A large crowd as always at the weekly march in Tbilisi. Georgians have been protesting in 8+ cities every day for the last 507 days.
Bog land is a bigger carbon sink than a forest, the idea of digging them up to build Data fucking energy sucking centres is beyond belief.

The energy crisis IS the climate crisis.
And we have a Government that is ignoring its climate commitments, at the long term expense of all of us.
Show your support for our Earth Day Motion, demanding that the Govt recommit to its 2030 climate targets and steer us away from fossil fuel dependency
Some excellent points from John Gibbons. The carbon tax is a progressive measure, with revenues ring-fenced to support public spending that helps the most vulnerable transition to warmer homes & more sustainable farming practices. Points both the government and opposition should be highlighting
If you had doubts about who Independent Ireland are and some of the fuel protest leaders - well they’re showing us.
Protesters and those whose livelihoods are at stake should have nothing to do with the far right or bigotry. #fuelprotests
Getting real tired of "AI will revolutionize your workflow!" I am a scientist! I do what I do because I want to dig into things myself. I don't want offload that labor onto a computer, and I don't need to accelerate the rate at which I work, because the point of the work is to learn.

I don't think so. The US is less of the "centre of the tech universe" than imagined, speaking as a frmr EU employee of US multinationals, my work was seen as "US tech" even when created in Ireland. The companies may be HQ'd in the US, but have significant staff in EU.
This is how it's done!

Oh, FGS -
@politico.com is taking sponsorship money from Palantir - running their ads through news updates.
That's absolutely the *last* thing we need in our politics, Palantir going straight for the political-media environment at a time when we need massive scrutiny of their contracts in the UK.
Decarbonisation is the answer.
This is the second fossil fuel crisis in just a few years. The evidence is clear: dependency on fossil fuels remains the most expensive option for Europe — and citizens are feeling it at the petrol station, in the supermarket, and on their bills.
The most dangerous vehicles on our streets are HGVs. In many vehicles, drivers simply cannot see pedestrians and cyclists around them. I passed a motion at Dublin City Council requiring Heavy Goods Vehicles to adhere to safety standards for driver field of vision.
