The nature of realism, then, is not to tell the truth about the
ANTENNAE ISSUE #69 'REALISM' IS NOW ONLINE!
Hot off the press for Earth Day, here's Antennae's new issue dedicated to Realism and the representation of the natural world. Realism gives us the contour of a leaf while concealing the fungal networks beneath the soil; it reveals the plumage of a
If anything we can use today as a reminder that every day should be earth day starting today. #earthday #nature #power #life #biodiversity #climatechange #future #present #groundedness
It is deeply sad that we should need an “Earth Day” at all. The very idea carries the wrong implication. The planet is not a cause among others, nor a theme to be acknowledged once a year. It is everything we have. It is the ground of every life, every hope, every future.

Jokes aside, it is deeply sad that we should need an “Earth Day” at all. The very idea carries the wrong implication. The planet is not a cause among others, nor a theme to be acknowledged once a year. It is everything we have. It is the ground of every life, every hope, every future.
The unwanted that persists, breeds, and refuses disappearance. In these works, beauty does not obfuscate precarity. Original and impactful work that thrives on subtle tensions.

murky water, reeds, milkweed, fences, reflections, and the human-made violence that outlines the edges of a landscape.
What moves me most is the way swiderski turns these overlooked, transitional places into emblems of survival.
Another vegetal gem from EXPOCHICAGO2026. rocki swiderski’s paintings of no-man's land and liminal spaces are full of fragile beauty. These paintings linger in the uneasy space where vulnerability is rooted in resilience:
In the context of an art fair almost entirely voided of nature, Matelli's sculptures take on the form of a cautionary tale.
#art #plants #weeds #miartmilano #tonymatelli #sculpture
For Matelli, the weeds are bound up with questions of value, belonging, and persistence: what counts as a weed, what counts as a cultivated plant, and what is considered acceptable or out of place.
And yet, across this strange nature-desert, it was a pleasure to encounter Tony Matelli’s hyperrealist sculptures of weeds: stubborn, unspectacular forms of life reclaiming space where so much else seemed detached from the natural world.
A quick visit to Miart 2026, Milan’s contemporary art fair. One thing that struck me was the near-total absence of animals and plants in the works on view. By comparison, EXPO Chicago felt like a vegetal triumph.
Open to interpretation, the work can invite an ecological conception of being together in relationships of dependency and mutual support woven into a diverse tapestry of hope.

When in Milan in Spring or Summer, I always stop by to relive the magic... and there they are, still. Right in the heart of the city. One just has to look carefully...

You had to move slowly and silently and it was also important to train your eye to spot them as they blended in so well with their surrounding. Often times, these swift little reptiles would dash off as fast as lighting upon being discovered.
Some things don't change. As I child, I was obsessed with wall lizards (Podarcis muralis Laurenti) that thrived on the perimeter wall of my kindergarten in spring and summer. Most kids played with balls and hoops. I spent time looking for them and would take friends to discover them with me.

A handful of hours in London while en route to Venice. How could I not rush to Greenwich Park to see the rhododendron, azaleas and cherries in bloom?

It's a lovely plant-power painting filled with detail and beautifully executed. Represented by @sungallery_1977 #art #plants #artfair #nature #painting #korea
The artist reinvents pointillism for the contemporary gaze, creating a vibrant sense of motion in the work. The forest sprawls across a viaduct. Like an avalanche of uncontainable green it seems to tumble over the highway beneath it.
This year, @expochicago was a triumph of vegetal gorgeousness! I will share some of my highlights here over the next few days starting from Korean painter Manna Lee, here represented with 'Forest' (2023), a lush and intriguing oil on canvas.
