Cradle Root Rot Cradle Root Rot by Isla Lader

My story published with heartlines spec is out to read for free today! A very loose retelling of the little mermaid that now includes the life cycle of a tadpole, the forever war, and a meditation on "motherhood".

We see two house sparrows drinking out of a puddle. The male says to the female: "Good puddle!" to which she replies "I love you but you have low standards". Pigeons arrive in the background, the female says "Ope! Here comes the herd" There is a long horizontal frame of the two sparrows in the midst of a bunch of pigeons cooing around them. The male then says "gentle giants" the female agrees "mhm" and then says "coo" and the male responds "haha. coo!"

A screenshot of a post that reads David Simon, creator of *The Wire*, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro, NPR

And then a screenshot of a conversation that goes like this:

SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Midnight Theater title by Thomas J. Padden

When a mountainous theater of labyrinthian design appears at the edge of town in the middle of the night, plucky young filmmaker, Andrew, can think of only one thing to do: hand them his résumé.

This was just posted by @tbretc.bsky.social on another platform. The Chicago Sun-Times obviously gets ChatGPT to write a ‘summer reads’ feature almost entirely made up of real authors but completely fake books. What are we coming to?

It’s been a while since I could say this but…I have a new story out in @clarkesworldmagazine.com!

“Brainstem Disco, 2191” explores the association of music with memories (and I’d love if you listened to the quasi-soundtrack while reading!)

Comic cover rendered in blue and orange hues. The title of the comic is BALLAD FOR BLACK CASSANDRA, written and drawn by Olivia Stephens. The cover illustration features a Black person with short coiled hair standing in waist high water and staring upwards with an orange glint reflecting in their eyes. The sky features a harsh, dramatic orange texture.
