if you really look at the timeline from Germany surrender to Japanese surrender it is very hard to argue that the atom bombs did not help American military and political goals immensely, in large part because they scared stalin

i really hate the argument that "it was the soviets entering the war that caused Japan to surrender"

the soviets were stringing the Japanese along with false hopes of a negotiated settlement because of Stalin's imperial goals, if anything the soviets made the bomb more neccessary to end the war

The image being spread in this post is not true.
It comes from the Facebook post in screenshot #1.
While Japan *is* working on integrating more solar, only 20% of power for a single subset of Japan's network in Aomori and Akita (working with JR East) is using dedicated solar (see link down thread).

two tweets from helena horton, a journalist at the guardian:
The real Joe isn’t on X and this account is based in the US and connected via the Brazil App Store. Jonathan the tortoise is apparently alive and well.

The governor of St Helena just told me he went outside to check on the tortoise, who was sleeping as it is past his bedtime, but he is very much alive.

The Second Balkan War is legitimately among the funniest things ever, like if a plucky underdog team won the World Cup and then started to fight each other before they even make it to the locker room.

The Japanese word for carrot is ニンジン, which is borrowed from Chinese 人參 for ginseng. The "gin" in ginseng, meanwhile, is 人 Chinese for person. Because, well.

Now There's a Helium Shortage and It Affects More Than Balloons | Odd Lots YouTube video by Bloomberg Podcasts

Sorry to report to @hankgreen.bsky.social and @vicmmic.bsky.social that there is a (temporary) helium shortage because a lot of it is sitting in tanks in Qatar and they can only sit there so long as a liquid before they have to vent them as the tanks warm up.

This is living advice:

If you find yourself in a situation where you are consulting Polymarket whether or not to sleep near the bomb shelter, just sleep near the fucking bomb shelter.

Or if possible, very, very, very far from the bomb shelter.
