Maths qualifications need ‘urgent reform’, says exam board Thousands of students in England unsuccessfully resit GCSE tests each year

How would you reform UK math qualifications? 12.30, I'm on BBC Radio 2.

Exam board OCR called for government to introduce “short course” maths course on fundamental skills (like fractions & percentages) & provide better alternative for 40% of students who fail maths GCSE

Congratulations @johnwestwell.bsky.social 🎉👏🍾 - Master of acronyms and now you have one to call your own - MBE. I remember those early days when @ncetm.bsky.social were thinking about “MESH” before the MH was settled upon. What a vision to be realised.

The Nine Lesson … events are a stalwart of our Christmases. Our kids loved the family version for a few years but now they only want to come to the one where the adults are allowed to swear! 🤣 @goddent83.bsky.social @atmmathematics.bsky.social @robeastaway.bsky.social @standupmaths.bsky.social

This👇🏽. The obsession with children needing to be “school ready” is a misnoma. Attempts to set expectation of groups of homogenous 4/5 year olds and ignores the diversity of experiences they bring as they start school. @aaronearlyyears.bsky.social @helenjwc.bsky.social @cathgripton.bsky.social

The base of the largest triangle is horizontal along the bottom of the picture. On its left edge, and sharing the left vertex, is a smaller purple triangle with area 20. On the right edge of the large triangle, and sharing its right vertex, is a yellow triangle with area 5. All three of the red triangle’s vertices lie on the edges of the large triangle, and the vertices on the left and right are shared with the purple and yellow triangles respectively. In the centre of the red triangle is a question mark.

Four equilateral triangles. What’s the area of the red one?

What makes you feel the “inside” perimeters are not the same? I’m counting the same number of blues and greens?

Mmmm interesting. 🤔

I was thinking that you might justify that the more sides the larger the area. The more circular it gets?

1 year ago 0 0 1 0

Can justify why the areas might be different? 😉

really all I'm doing is paraphrasing my memory of John Mason's "learning and doing mathematics", but I think there's a blogpost in applications to the classroom. I wrote a bit about this here:
