you'd have to raise federal grant funding significantly above pre-Trump admin levels for the same to happen. either that, or a "science institute" without chemistry, physics, biology, engineering...in other words a math and cs technical institute, which I guess the techbros in this admin would love.

that's why MIT and Caltech still have english faculty. a lot of people are talking about the moral issues, which is an important question! but my concerns are more pragmatic. true "hard science" institutes like KAIST in South Korea and USTC in China are essentially kept afloat by the government.
and as it turns out universities need that money from humanities to balance the budget. yes, there's a ton of admin bloat and sports programs bloat and amenities bloat you can cut out, but even still, all the budget efficiency in the world can't make a pure science institution profitable.
for large programs or private schools where tuition is 80k, this is magnitudes higher. this is why stuff like communications, criminology, psychology, business, etc. are so prevalent at associate and for-profit institutions. when was the last time you saw devry offer a chemical engineering degree?
modern uni admins run college like a business. if these humanities programs were truly a liability for the institute, then they'd be discarded long ago. I did some back-of-the-napkin math and found for a normal state university, a humanities program with 100 total undergrads would generate 7.4 mil.
federal funding isn't enough and none of the sciences besides cs are popular enough to make enough tuition revenue to cover their costs. meanwhile the only major expense from a humanities department is faculty salaries, which means just 1-2 students per year can make those departments profitable.
and it's not just the big projects either: higher utilities bills (electricity, heating), higher supply bills (parafilm, glassware, chemicals), higher payrolls (postdocs, STEM professors making more), higher travel expenses (fieldwork, conferences.) a box of kimwipes is 100 dollars lmao.
as it turns out science is fucking EXPENSIVE. undergrad broke an autoclave? that'd be 10k. physics department wants a particle accelerator? 200 million (in 1981 dollars.) our telescope partnership with Caltech costed 60 million. recent lab renovations for engineering costed hundreds of millions.
hey! Former researcher at Cornell on GMOs and pesticides here, now I write fiction instead.
all "hard science" departments lose money and most humanities/"soft science" departments make money. it is an open secret in academia that the humanities cover the shortfall for our scientist colleagues

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act will devastate the New york bodega business. The tax cuts are nice, but the cost-push inflation isn't

After a long search, uncertain that it even existed, I finally located the CD-ROM TRIPITAKA 玄奘三蔵求法の旅, the elusive sequel to the legendary Cosmology of Kyoto. Here is the ISO for your emulational pleasure.

for most american eggs the yolks are super pale-yellowish because the hens literally only eat corn and soybean feed in small ass confined spaces and they don't forage for insects and eat protein flowers carrots nuts etc. eggs in every other country tends to be oranger
also unlike american eggs japanese rice is acually good.
was looking at rice commodity prices and went "thank god I don't live in japan anymore" before remembering I paid 10 dollars for a carton of eggs two months ago
never done a dna test and never will but I think my dna is mostly northern han anyways
it saves a fuck ton of effort and now that I might actually be working in china this fall semester (crazy, I know -- praying I pass the final interview round) there's not much benefit to maintaining my ties to a nation that I don't feel any nostalgia too besides dunking on filipino nazis on twitter
I can still read fine I guess but my ability to converse is like zero. doesn't help that we don't speak japanese in the house bc my parents were faculty and valued english knowledge super highly.
