I think Americans have to understand things won't go back to normal and no one is coming to save us. The self destructive decision to vote for Trump is going to cause long term pain, damage and weakness. We have to survive and try to rebuild something better. Generational effort sadly.

I would argue that it’s more so the latter than the former. People willing to vote against their interests if it means those they deem as “other” are going to hurt the same, if not worse than them.
And that's on top of preexisting prejudices towards outgroups that make people more vulnerable to that type of manipulation.
