A family friend found this vintage Ladybird 1000-piece jigsaw in a charity shop and gave it to me.

Isn’t is a thing of beauty?

OMFG I had to go and check that this ACTUALLY happened.

Since when does the BBC ever do chyrons with a political party's branding, rather than their own? Not to mention this is during a pre-election campaign purdah.

Caricature représentant les astronautes de la mission Artemis II contemplant la Terre depuis leur navette spatiale. Alors que l'un s'exclame "Là ! Des cratères", un autre répond "Ça s'appelle le Moyen-Orient".

WHY ISN'T ANYONE TALKING ABOUT THE REAL NEWS STORIES!!!

Yes - some of the high-end olive oil I’ve seen is frighteningly expensive. Don’t suppose even the basic stuff is going to get any cheaper anytime soon.

Olive oil I can kind of understand, but tuna’s going a bit far. I suppose easier to steal though.
Am in UK at moment where self-service tills are just about the norm in supermarkets, plus staff have couldn’t care less attitude. Dread to think how much is not going through the scanners.

SPOILER ALERT:
1. UK was in the EU.
2. While in the EU, UK helped write rules to deal with visitors from outside the EU.
3. UK left the EU with Brexit.
4. Uk is now subject to the rules for non-EU visitors it once helped write.
5. Isn't karma a bitch? 😂

screencap of a tweet with a photo at the bottom of JD Vance giving a talk, gesturing smugly with his hands

Eric Daugherty • @EricLDaugh • 1h
• JD VANCE RESPONDS TO POPE LEO:
"When the Pope says that God is never on the side of those who wield the sword - there is more than a THOUSAND year tradition of Just war Theory."

"In the same way that it's important for the vice president of the United States to be careful when I talk about matters of public policy, I think it's very, very important for the pope to be careful when he talks about matters of theology."

"And I think that one of these issues here is that there has been - if you're going to opine on matters of theology, you've got to be careful, you've got to make sure it's anchored in the truth, and that's one of the things that I try to do, and it's certainly something I would expect from the clergy, whether they're Catholic or Protestant."

I’ve given this a great deal of thought, trying to come up with the perfect joke for this moment, and this is what I have so far -

POPE LEO: our religion teaches that this war is bad

VANCE: wow, who died and made YOU head of the Catholic Church??

POPE LEO: well, you should know, you were there

thatch finials were, historically, often used to indicate something about the resident- a hint at their occupation or the number of children, sometimes.

so anyway i have some questions, namely, where is this house so i can figure out who thatched it and offer them a round of applause

"Vance" is a useful new verb in the English language, and one consistent with our Latinate heritage.

Compare:

➡️ ADVANCE: To move something forward.
⬅️ VANCE: To cause a situation to decline or devolve.

In a sentence:

"Donald Trump's second term vanced the American economy."

A Squirrel Tale (or: I Was an Emotional Hostage to a Rodent Family)

We live in an old house. Like, 100-years-old-and-held-together-with-optimism old. Naturally, this made it irresistible to squirrels, who found a tiny chink in our armor under the roof and decided: yes, this will be our ballroom.

I do live in a big house (in France, much cheaper to buy) - the heating bills are horrendous and most of the time when we haven’t got people staying we live mainly on one level. It takes 3 days to clean. Domestic staff would be bliss to have! But I do love living here.

The world intelligence agencies have a two week window to leak the complete Epstein Files. It’s actually a very prudent and economical act of national defense. We can’t keep letting him put us through this.

Would any of you wise people know of a medical/midwifery text from #earlymodern period that mentions head massage for infants? Or an ancient text reprinted?

I cannot keep track with how many notifications I'm getting from all over Beirut and south Lebanon right now of the places that Israel is obliterating. There are multiple reports of multiple massacres in the past hour alone.

My wife was a primary school teacher. I asked for her comments re Trump’s latest post: “If he were in my class, he would be sitting alone “colouring in” while the rest of the class were doing long division”.
