Yeah, certain moves were hardcoded to be auto-floorhuggable (untimed), but anything over a certain knockback threshhold required a timed hard press down to floorhug. Mistimed floorhugs were indicated with a red flash.

had some BIG nerves going into R2 pools today, had some controller cable issues causing disconnects mid-game but had a vendor kindly give me a new cable for free.
