This also means that this is the year of the Bell Riots and we have ww3 to live through in the next couple of years.... The way things are looking makes me wonder if Gene's middle name wasn't Nostradamus.

Spend all day underground in an old mine and my favorite picture of the day is some mold growing on an old piece of wood😂. Guess I'm a bad #geologist. To the #biology folks, any idea what this stuff is?
Found some really nest massive sulfide veins as well.

Years ago, my mineralogy prof read us a letter by NL Bowen, chastising a prof for shouting BS every time Bowen said equilibrium in a lecture. I still shout BS when I someone says equil =) My std think I'm crazy
Dnt believe me? Even @ >850C and >100 Mya rocks don't reach equil

Richest 1% account for more carbon emissions than poorest 66%, report says ‘Polluter elite’ are plundering the planet to point of destruction, says Oxfam after comprehensive study of climate inequality

Point made by Kevin Anderson often. Tackling climate change is about limiting the ability to the v richest to consume beyond the limits most people can't even dream of. It's a chance for greater fairness and equitability, not for general impoverishment. www.theguardian.com/environment/... #energysky

Thanks for the quick responses. Gypsum makes sense I think. We saw some more cubic minerals of the same color later in the same mine adit. Probs all Gypsum.

Asbestiform mineral growing in a historic gold mine. Hohen Tauern, AT

To the mineralogy crowd out there. Does anyone know what this asbestiform mineral growing underground in a relatively modern (1920ish) gold mine? The surface it was growing on was a shear surface on a sulfide containing gneiss.

Back in the Tauern this week with the our Geo Survey to measure sizes of mine waste dumps with geophysics.
A difficult but essential task if we want to get an estimate of the resources we have.
This week we are measuring a few test case where the know the tonnages from old mining docs.

Deal, but it better be in a tumbler and neat (with a splash of water)

Traffic at the end of the day. Farmer bringing the cows home after a long day of grazing, much like i was bringing a herd of students home after a long day of mapping!

Day two of the #MUL geo mapping course in the bag. Gorgeous views and excited students! Even got above the snow line for a bit, but even in the Alps you have to deal with traffic at the end of the day! =)

New to this bluesky thing, wanted to introduce myself.
I am a facutly member at the mining university in Austria, where my students and I are focused on historic mine dumps as a source of the critical metals that we so desperately need to end our reliance on fossil fuels.
