A scan of an article about birding and friendship during these difficult times, featuring my photo of a squirrel eating a starling
Please read this article from the June 2025 issue of Birding mag by @aba.org, titled "The Core of Birding: Friendship and Distance", by my friend/editor of Birding, Frank Izaguirre @birdizlife.bsky.social, who also kindly wrote a wonderful foreword to my book "Out of the Lyme Light." #birds
Hey that's me
Hey that's at the Carnegie!
Yellow breasted chat among unripe mulberries, facing right. The bird has a dark head with bold white spectacles, a chonky black beak, a brilliant yellow breast, and white underparts. The wings are mostly hidden but are uniform dark gray.
College bird #104 is none other than the improvisational jazz master of thicket and field, the YELLOW BREASTED CHAT #birds
Gray-cheeked Thrush is probably my favorite.
Warblers often steal the show, but there are a lot of great spring migrants moving north. What's your favorite non-warbler spring migrant?

It’s time for another This Month in Birding, this time for April, despite the fact that this episode technically comes out in May. That’s bonus for May rather than a loss for April. Listen to Gabriel Foley, Frank Izaguirre, and Purbita Saha chat with host Nate Swick this week: www.aba.org/72239-2/
We want to hear from you! The American Birding Association is looking for feedback from members and our wider community to help us better understand what's important to you as a birder, and how the ABA can best be of service to birders. www.aba.org/survey2025/
In 2021, the Bird Conservation Network released its breeding bird analysis, showing a big gap in nighthawk data in Chicago. With more data on their populations, conservation actions can be taken. Do you want to help collect data? Join the COS Nighthawk Project!

Before April 20, there had never been a Cook County, Illinois, record for Mountain Bluebird, Sialia currucoides. But as of April 21, there are three. Chicago appears to be experiencing a Mountain Bluebird invasion. www.aba.org/mountain-blu...

Hellbender and marbled are the salie priorities for me. Someday I will make a directed effort for them.
Amazing spotted salamander night. 15-20!
Here’s an alt text description for the image: A black-and-white New Yorker cartoon by Christopher Weyant depicts a sandpiper lying on a therapist’s couch, appearing to be in a therapy session. The therapist, a human with a mustache, glasses, and a notepad, is sitting in a chair beside the couch, attentively listening. The office has framed certificates on the wall and a lamp on a side table. The caption reads: “Maybe it’s more than just the waves you’re running from.” The cartoon humorously plays on the sandpiper’s natural behavior of running away from waves on the shore, suggesting a deeper psychological meaning.
Silly psy cartoon for the weekend!

Also @troydeclan.bsky.social
I wouldn't exactly say I have a list but @burrowingowl.bsky.social and @glengrambo.bsky.social are great.
