But then... The Kids™️ discovered it. And HOO BOY the game's reputation has never recovered.

But, the thing about the fandom is that, when the game first came out, it was normal? It was all millennials talking about it like a game they liked, without being TOO wild about it. All in all, fairly average fandom from what I could see.
My favorite thing about that route is that Flowey specifically calls out people watching the genocide route online because they're too nice/timid/etc. to actually do it themselves.
And, because Undertale came out back around 2015, before so many games started to copy it... IT REALLY WORKED.
