We hope that the Premier’s decision to stand down DRIPA amendments means his government is finally ready to collaborate with First Nations, as equals. Eby must act on his predecessor John Horgan’s words: ‘Reconciliation is ‘not for wimps.’

The problem isn’t DRIPA. The problem is the government’s failure to implement DRIPA. We provided a constructive plan to resolve tension, increase certainty, and advance DRIPA to the government.

The Government has spent months avoiding and delaying good faith negotiations with First Nations. We hope that they have now realised that the only path forward is active reconciliation, as defined in legislation.

As the only party in the Legislature supporting the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) as written, the BC Greens presented a constructive path forward on its advancement, shared directly with Attorney General Niki Sharma last week.

Deloitte used the 2009 Tsawwassen First Nation Treaty as a case study. With less than 600 members, since becoming self-governing Tsawwassen has created over 11,000 permanent jobs, built over 10,000 housing units, and has generated over $485 million in annual net income to British Columbians.

Certainty, Predictability, Prosperity

Modern Treaties benefit Canada as a whole, providing certainty to land owners, investors and residents. A 2025 Deloitte report makes it clear: modern treaties deliver economic benefits, in addition to socio-cultural benefits.

These treaties lay the groundwork for centuries of cooperation to come and amendments if needed. They will continue to evolve with our society and future court cases.

This is how we recognize the rights of all people who live here, and create a long term plan to share the bounty of BC.

Living Agreements

The Modern Treaties going through the BC Legislature this year are living agreements. That means all parties agree that the treaty should change over time to meet the needs of all parties into the future. These treaties are also subject to periodic renewal provisions.

Reconciliation in action

Modern Treaties are the highest form of reconciliation between the Crown and First Nations.

There are 8 Modern Treaties in BC, and 30 across Canada. Each one has gone through decades of careful negotiation, with years of transparent consultation with the public.

After over 30 years of negotiation and public consultations, this spring, two Modern Treaties are going through the BC Legislature to become law.

What does that mean?

...BC Hydro must know too, because the electricity lines they’ve been asked to build have far more capacity than Woodfibre currently needs.

How long has the BCNDP known about this scope creep, with more tanker trips, and more pollution than was ever advertised?

The Federal Energy Minister recently spoke about a potential tripling of WoodfibreLNG exports.

FortisBC seems to have known for longer, because they’ve overbuilt pipeline infrastructure to accommodate more capacity....

Since Woodfibre LNG was first proposed in 2014, communities in Átl'ḵa7tsem / Howe Sound have worried it would be larger, dirtier, and more damaging than this government claimed.

Evidence is mounting that those worries will become reality.

"Every death in this crisis is a policy choice. This province once led the way on harm reduction. Now, it is failing to show the leadership needed to save lives.”

political bravery is what's lacking in this government, and that's what this emergency demands

We’ll continue to advocate for evidence-based solutions to this crisis to prevent further loss of life. That means expanding voluntary, community-based treatment, providing regulated pharmaceutical alternatives, and establishing consistent, evidence-based standards of care across the province.

The government declared this an emergency—it’s time they acted like it. More than 18,000 people have died due to the toxic drug supply in the past decade. These numbers represent far more than statistics—each death is a brother, a sister, a parent, a friend or neighbour.

The answers from Attorney General Sharma were promising!

Thanks to the work of @fairvote.ca we know that many BC NDP MLAs support electoral reform.

Together, we can keep up the pressure, and keep making progress.

People experiencing or at risk of homelessness are part of our communities. Homes that are culturally safe, connected, and well-designed improve safety for the people they support, for the staff that work there, and for the wider community in which they are situated.

Eviction does the opposite.

1 week ago 2 0 1 0

The BC NDP is making it easier to evict people. Instead, they should address the root causes of public safety, including:
-Poor conditions in Supportive Housing
-Systemic Racism
-Unaffordable housing
-Lack of Mental Health Resources
-Over-burdened healthcare systems
-Toxic Drug Supply

5. Bill 11 does not engage with or implement the expertise and lived experiences of supportive housing tenants, especially those who have experienced eviction.

1 week ago 3 0 1 0

3. Bill 11 pits the safety of supportive housing workers against the safety, rights, and dignity of tenants.

4. Bill 11 allows the government to determine tenant rights without any transparency.

1 week ago 3 0 1 0

2. Bill 11 increases the likelihood that tenants will be surveilled, criminalized and thrown out of their homes with no resources or recourse.

1 week ago 3 0 1 0

1. Bill 11 gives landlords & government more power to evict tenants, take property, restrict access to housing, and determine/intervene on “weapons” use.

("Weapon” is not defined in Bill 11. This could lead to abuses of power, over-policing & tenants losing their homes for owning everyday objects.)
