In these dark times, at least there is some glint in the power and hope provided by feminist art. I first “met” Marya more than a decade ago on Tumblr, & was so inspired by her. Now her project is physically present & you need to buy it &, if possible, see her speak about it/its progress. FIGHT ON.

This is SO AMAZING! 🤩
Oh! Thanks to Reddit for giving me the info that the film itself isn’t out of copyright because some of the songs featured had their rights’ renewed… So I can’t show y’all how my 1930s faves banish my blues away. Alas, gloom and misery everywhere!
I was about to “bird” a link (what’s this site’s version of “tweet”?) to a non-copyrighted version of a film starring the greatest jazz songs and dance sequences of all time, then realized that’d probably still could contribute to get it taken down because of the power of platform holders. Ugh.
Using social media to promote my beliefs:
I should have known better and ran away when, sat at this table at a bridal shower, all the people were discussing how they/their kids’d just recovered from colds/flus/Covid…. But I couldn’t help myself! I need human contact! 🤦🏼♀️
Oh great, and now I’ve caught the flu. At least it’s not Covid, I guess! *facepalm*
The worst thing now is deciding whether I should help out current 18th-c. grad students (which of course I want to), but maybe I should use the time to apply to paying jobs.
From the Reddit threads I’ve been reading, it looks like I’m fucked because interviews were not a thing when I got into my program (12 years ago, DM me if you’re thinking about Duke… I’ll give you all the tea).
Received my U Chicago application rejection while I was on the L to a seminar downtown on 18th-century literature. Gee wiz, it’d hurt if it wasn’t objectively hilarious.
AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!
Long live the New California Republic!
Basically, the country’s been taken over by a bunch of internet trolls and podcasters who thought running the government would be as easy as complaining about it.
Lol to this flashback from five years ago, and, hello properly, Bluesky (thank you for being better):
Met a random person from Côte d’Ivoire today when I went to buy groceries, and, when I said I’d studied French for 7 years, we switched to speaking in that language. Which means I’m now restarting my Duolingo lessons because, damn, I’ve forgotten so much…!
Happy Valentine’s Day to me, I guess!
Met some recent Duke undergrads at the coffee shop who’d just moved to Chicago because they saw the WXDU sticker on my laptop and asked if I was from Durham. So I gave them the lowdown on cool places in the city to watch music for free!
The few friends I have in town aren’t answering my texts, so what am I doing for NYE? I’m watching as many Coen Brothers movies as I can before they expire from @criterion streaming at midnight! Whooo!
The holidays/me gifting myself a Criterion subscription (aka playing the 24/7 in the background as I sleep and waking up to discover something brilliant at 3am I can’t pull myself away from (yesterday was THE LOVE DEVIL)), means my body’s clock is so confused now I’m making my Spam Alfredo at 5am. 🤦🏼♀️
“What is there to fight for? Everything! Life itself, isn't that enough? To be lived, suffered, enjoyed! What is there to fight for? Life is a beautiful, magnificent thing, even to a jellyfish.” If you’ve never seen Chaplin’s 1952 film LIMELIGHT, give yourself a gift and watch it now.
Rhiannon. Literary Celtic Queen/Goddess of Whales in the early Middle Ages.
First selfie with my new baby girl was a success. I’ll believe in love at first sight forever now.
I COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THE CHRISTMAS TRAIN UNTIL, COMING HOME, I RANDOMLY GOT TO SEE IT (AND SANTA) MYSELF! 🎅🏻 Delays forgiven. Chicago, I love you.
Especially ironic since the booktalk I was headed to was for this glorious book:
The CTA is making me late to another event even though I set out 30 minutes early because I’ve become the kind of person who HATES being late. So the troll on the Red Line who called me a “ho” almost got a lecture about the history of prostitution, but I managed to stop myself.
Anyways, here’s a picture of me from 1993, with my first cat, “Captain Jean-Luc Picard” (my brother named him that):
OH HOLY SHIT. I switched my “background sleeping show” to STAR TREK: TNG and just woke up to the argument between Data/Lor (S01E12) which is the EXACT SAME ARGUMENT we’re currently seeing about AI-involvement in writing. This episode came out 3 WEEKS AFTER I WAS BORN & is on our side.
No worries! Just wanted to make sure I got the day right, yay!
The post says Saturday, December 6th (but Saturday is the 7th)!
