I had a senior programmer with over 2 decades of experience insist to me that containers were "lightweight VMs" because the one they were running used 200mb of memory.

People use things without any inkling of what they are. But I guess people drive cars without ever looking under the hood, either.

To be fair most people who write software have no idea what their own code actually does and don't particularly care as long as they keep getting paid by people who understand even less.

It may be bonkers but it is also very predictable. The US became the world's war machine in exchange for favorable trade deals. We lost control of it a long time ago.

For over two years, Israel has engaged in a documented genocide and possesses nuclear weapons. Yet Iran is the existential threat? The inconsistency tells you everything about whose lives matter in this narrative.

Contrasted with the cowardice of a government who built a headless military machine.

There's a word for specifying what to build and how to build it.

It's called coding.

And the wall that keeps the world out and scared of us also keeps everyone from getting in to help us.

If you want to keep a Trump from happening again, defunding the police isn't optional. We have to be anticarceral. The prison industrial complex must be eliminated.

Full text of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s letter to Americans – Thought Portal

The president of Iran has written a letter to the citizens of the United States.
It’s not a crazy ranting speech intended to bully us, like we get from our own government. It comes across as a very honest appeal to rethink our actions.

What Israel’s death penalty reveals when law becomes a boundary of belonging A law can sometimes reveal more than a thousand speeches ever could. Israel’s newly passed ‘Death Penalty for Terrorists’ statute does precisely that. It is not merely a legislative shi…

Maybe we'll find some universal healthcare and housing up there 🫡

This is a good explainer, but I'm left wondering how they pay off those loans without selling their assets and incurring capital gains.

Rest in Piss GenAI

I think too many devs are addicted to slopware tho. Zombie for a bit.

"No warranties" already covers this. If I deploy software that's illegal where I live, that's on me.

Distro maintainers will likely add a "enable age verification" option to their installers for people who really need cover for this.

This narrative runs parallel to what I witnessed, in which is IDEs started looking more and more like slot machines, where developers pull the lever and get a hit of dopamine if and when the right code pops out.

I saw something a while ago about how IDEs have undergone a progression of more and more sophisticated autocomplete, with genAI being the next logical step.

Pope Leo this week called universal health coverage a "moral imperative."

He also said: “Health cannot be a luxury for the few,” it is “an essential condition for social peace.”

The thing is they aren't making money. The entire thing is circular financing scheme. They will never make good on any promise because they will be bankrupt in 5 years.

The harm however will last for a generation.

"Universal health coverage is not merely a technical goal to be achieved; it is primarily a moral imperative for societies that wish to call themselves just." —Pope Leo XIV

The economy is not fundamentally dependent on oil.

The military is.

Now we're expecting a neural net (trained only on Python and who-knows-who's comments about what they THINK their code does at cost of billions of dollars) to produce correct Python that runs C compiled to ISA.

Or... we just educate more people about ISAs and effective software engineering.

Computer hardware fundamentally talks in its ISA (x86, aarch64 etc).

ISA is hard to reason about, so we invented high level languages like C to generate standardized ISA code.

C used to be slow to compile, so we invented scripting languages like Python to run code compiled from standardized C.

The US as a country is basically one giant mercenary corps.

Our primary export is violence, and it subsidizes every other aspect of our economy.
