Got a pedicure this evening and the person noticed my tattoo of my son’s footprints. Then the dreaded question was asked “How old is he?”

It’s an odd feeling that only a bereaved parent knows, to have to curate our response so it’s delivered in a gentle way to a stranger, when we say they died.

PAUSE P – Pay full attention A – Acknowledge without fixing U – Use questions and silence wisely S – Show understanding E – Empathise, not analyse

In conversations about mental health suicide or distress, our instinct is often to help by offering solutions.

But real connection starts when we PAUSE - when we make space to listen, not fix 💛
