François Ozon adapts Albert Camus' novella THE STRANGER into an enigmatic, beautifully made tale of apathy, privilege, and colonialist prejudice.

In my third and final dispatch from #MSPIFF #MSPIFF45, I cover The Last Viking, Young Mothers, and Late Fame. Liked all of them to varying degrees.
Stay tuned for more. Still have some full-length reviews to write.

With just a few days left of #MSPIFF #MSPIFF45, I'm pretty certain that the film of the festival, and also of the year so far, is SILENT FRIEND. What a masterpiece.
My review is exclusive to my #Patreon until the film opens next month. www.deepfocusreview.com/reviews/sile...
A bunch of new titles for my #LastFourWatched on this #LetterboxdFriday.
And here's my second dispatch from #MSPIFF #MSPIFF45, where I cover Two Prosecutors, The Travel Companion, and Living the Land.

I loved THE CHRISTOPHERS. It's Soderbergh's most personal film in years, if not ever. And it features outstanding performances from Michaela Coel and Ian McKellen.
It expands to more theaters on Friday.

For those using the current trade-route blockade to defend The Phantom Menace, the present situation doesn't somehow correct that movie's issues (stilted writing, listless acting, ugly CGI, etc.). The problem with it was never the plot. It was the execution.
Cool. So what does this mean?
For a guy who started in sketch comedy, moved to prestige drama, and then became an action star, I’d say his range is pretty diverse. We’ll just have to agree to disagree on that one…
? - No idea what you mean. His last couple of action movies have made money.
Bob Odenkirk returns to action-hero mode in NORMAL, an entertaining shoot-em-up set in a Minnesota town.
It's playing at #MSPIFF45 tonight and opens next week. Had a lot of fun with this one!

Hey #Minnesota, I was on KQRS (92.5 FM) yesterday morning talking movies with the "Gorman in the Morning" crew. We covered The Drama, Normal, The Christophers, and more.
Thanks to Steve, Fletcher, and Ryder for having me back on the show!

Here are my #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFriday. Had fun with YOU, ME & TUSCANY. But BODY COUNT was silly.
Also, #MSPIFF started with a bang (bam?): loved PARALYZED BY HOPE: THE MARIA BAMFORD STORY and especially THE CHRISTOPHERS.
On the new episode of THE CINEFILES, I join journo Chris Hrapsky and critic Jamie Rogers to review two new releases (THE DRAMA and NORMAL). Plus, Jamie interviews Bob Odenkirk and Derek Kolstad.

YOU, ME & TUSCANY is a cute movie. The stars are attractive. The locations are beautiful. The food looks delectable. And the romantic comedy setup is comfortably predictable.
Check it out this weekend.

EXIT 8 is a faithful adaptation of the 2023 walking simulator game, but that doesn't make it a successful movie. Although the movie captures the game's look and feel, I wanted a bit more from the story.
It opens 4/10 from Neon.

This clip to be included in the prologue of John Carpenter's new Snake Plissken movie, ESCAPE FROM THE US.
‘I'm pleased and happy to repeat the news that we have, in fact, decided not to destroy an entire civilisation. But, as you see, it's a beautiful day, The Strait of Hormuz is open and people are having a wonderful time.’
Add the new FACES OF DEATH to the shortlist of horror movie remakes that actually outdo their predecessors. It's scary, paranoid, and bloody, but without making you feel like you need a shower afterward.
It opens Friday.

Where's Johnny when you need him?
Absolutely, it's been a while since I've felt that exhilarated in a theater.
My top 3 films of 2026 (so far):
Here are my #LastFourWatched for #LetterboxdFriday. Rare for the best thing I saw on one of these posts to be TV, but that’s how it played out.
It's worth watching, if only for the oddity factor. But watch it with friends so you can remark on it throughout. A quiet watch alone might be excruciating and take the potential joy out of the experience.
Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are terrific in THE DRAMA, a mortifying and hilarious content-warning-of-a-movie that's already sparking debate.

On the bright side #Minnesota, the 45th annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) begins next week, with screenings at @themaincinema.bsky.social and other locations around the #TwinCities.
Lots I'm excited to see. www.deepfocusreview.com/mspiff45/
