As a matter of principle, you can either have a dinner that celebrates the First Amendment or you can have a dinner that features Donald Trump. You can’t have both because the president holds the freedom of the press in contempt. www.mediamatters.org/donald-trump...

Cool thread. Connection between Baltimore, MD and Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”.
As a native Texan, in a contest between online chuds and HEB for the hearts and minds of my folks, good luck betting against HEB.

They are being granted clemency because they’ve shown a willingness to engage in violence on the administrations behalf. It’s not judgement; it’s strategy.
At a time when academia and higher education are being undermined constantly and unfairly, this is wonderful to see! Colleges, universities, community colleges, HBCUs, all included, all great, and all need our support and not baseless claims of bias and ridiculous “free speech” criticisms.
Forgot it was a “virtual” conference. So I guess Zoom bomb it?
Organize some DOGE’d NIH scientists and stand outside selling rotten fruit? Sounds like a decent way to spend a weekend haha
No one in the Trump administration - and really not the current director of the NIH which they gutted by firing thousands of scientists and then cut funding for vaccine research - should ever be involved in anything related to “scientific integrity”. This is beyond disappointing from
NAS.
1. Nixon’s plan to end Vietnam was specifically to bomb other countries.
2. Neither Reagan or Nixon was “tough”. They both talked a good game - and Nixon was a red scare McCarthyite - but both got frequently outplayed and were sycophants to the wealthy.
The amazing, letter-perfect performance of NASA this week is a ferocious rebuke to the right-wing fools who constantly tell us that for-profit businesses always do a job better than the government.
Someone let @notalawyer.bsky.social know, right?
1. Idaho banned the pride flag on government property. So Boise made the pride flag their official city flag, which allowed them to fly it.
Then Idaho banned new city flags.
So in response, Boise has now wrapped the poles themselves in rainbows!

Or as a physicist friend of mine once said, “people are weird; atoms are predictable.”
My sound system would never be LCD.
P.S. - She was fine. Very nice folks in the pit helped us to the edge of the chaos. Some ice and Tylenol. Neither the concert or the relationship lasted long for me after that though. 🫤
Went to see the Toadies in concert in college. Not Boss-level icons, but a solid Texas band with a hit or two. Took my then girlfriend. Worked our way up to the stage. Toadies come on and absolutely RIP into “I Come From Water.” Mosh pit spontaneously erupts, my date catches an elbow to the face.
This take is accurate. Listen to the ABC News interview of Trump by Jonathan Karl this morning. It quickly becomes evident that Trump doesn't actually know the terms of the ceasefire deal he agreed to. He's not a negotiator. He's a buffoon.
Matches what I experienced.
A decapitated bunny suit head atop a set of bleachers.
“In this small community, the decapitated head that watches over the proceedings is a Disney-fied one. Velvety ears, vacant smile, soft fur. But for those with longer memories, it's a reminder of the old days. When their dark gods demanded a sacrifice before they would relent and let spring return.”
Fundraiser for librarian Luanne James, who stood up to her rightwing library board that demanded she remove kids books with any trace of LBGTQ+ characters or content.
"I will not comply."
They sacked her and cops escorted her out.
She's a hero. This banned author just donated.
As a former graduate student and current union member, solidarity forever.
Well, it's nice to have it confirmed that the aggression in so many confrontations with ICE were actually not only encouraged but demanded.

Anyway, exec term limits are good. They minimize the overall effect of controlling the apparatus of government at any level: state, local, or exec. The Romans tried dictators and dictators-for-life a couple times. Didn’t work out great for the Republic. Anyway, term limits are interesting!
There are other options - mandatory retirement at, say, 70/75 or so? That’s discriminatory though (by the legal definition) based on age. Expanding the court is probably a better idea, less influence of a small judicial clique and less shenanigans like at the end of Obama’s term.
Before the Supreme Court that the administration cares about and you, as a Justice, also care about continuing to exert influence after your term is over. How will this affect your decision?
But judicial term limits - at least long enough ones, some SCOTUS proposals say 18 year, probably about right - but they DO give the exec more influence over judicial decisions. Consider if you’re a scotus judge near the end of your term limit. The Attorney General slot is open and there’s a case…
Judicial term limits are trickier. They need independence from the executive branch. Many states has elected supreme courts, judges, etc and they are MUCH more reactive to outside influence (TX is a good example). There are options like retention elections in some states or recall, etc.
This is closely related to the idea of “professionalism” in state and legislative politics. That is, that legislators perform better the more “professional” they are - more resources, full time employment AS LEGISLATORS, etc. Hard to balance the exec if you’re only in the capital 3 months a year.
