Mayor Mamdani and a group of children hold hands while running through red tape in a hallway.
For too long, bureaucracy kept 7 child care centers across our city empty — spaces that should have been alive with laughter instead collected dust.
We've run through that red tape. This fall, all 7 will open their doors, bringing an additional 240 free 3-K seats & real relief to working families.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, which is best known for its tracking of hate groups, said that the Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into the nonprofit regarding their use of informants.
Really enjoying The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek. It's a very engaging story, and I'm learning about the blue-skinned people of Kentucky. This is why I love historical fiction -- I can be immersed in another reality AND learn something new. #books #reading #packhorselibrary #booksky 📚⏳💙
Cover for The Bletchley Riddle. On the top reads Remember, you are bound by the official secrets act... The title is across the width of the cover slanted slightly on most of the top half. Above it in the 2 top corners are silhouettes of planes. On the bottom half, centered is a silhouette of a motorbike with someone riding it, scarf blowing out behind them. A street with houses lining is is where the motorbike is. The sky behind is red in the middle with a glow fading out to a dark blue on the sides.
My review of The Bletchley Riddle by Rita Sepetys/Steve Sheinkin
5/5⭐
Curious if kids understand the maths & enigma but very thrilling & great characters & history!

“As you read a book word by word & page by page, you participate in its creation, just as a cellist playing a Bach suite participates, note by note, in the creation, the coming-to-be, the existence, of the music. And, as you read & re-read, the book of course participates in the creation of you.”
I really enjoyed 'The Expanded Earth' by Mikey Please.
Here, I take the opportunity to gush uncontrollably.

They started the fight. Texas. Florida. North Carolina. Gerrymandered maps, rigged districts, stolen seats. They thought we would just roll over.

During his livestream just a few moments ago, Alex Jones says his last broadcast under the Infowars banner will be May 30, adding: "Infowars is just a name!"
He then urges his listeners to continue to support the Alex Jones Network and the products that he sells under that brand.
Then, she mouthed … to me, like with no sound: ‘Help,’” Abohatem recounted to the outlet. He described getting out from behind the front counter’s protective glass, placing himself between the man and the girl and ordering him to leave the business.

EU: The European Union will require sale of mobile phones with “user-replaceable and longer-lasting batteries” starting in 2027.
The regulation demands “availability of spare parts and manuals for 10 years to curb planned obsolescence”.
Hours after Trump declared he had reached a deal with Iran it appears to have fallen apart. The folks on Fox News celebrated prematurely. Jesse Watters even called it the 'the greatest war in American history.'
NEW YORK (AP) — Air Canada will suspend service to New York’s JFK International airport over the summer as the war in Iran creates jet fuel shortages that have sent prices soaring.

A poster by Bird and Moon for Flap dot org. In a comic-style format, a bird explains for humans that window collisions kill billions of birds worldwide each year. Birds don't really get windows, and instead see a safe space past the glass, reflected outdoor plants, a reflected rival bird (themselves), or outdoor plants viewed through transparent corner windows. What can you do? There are cheap, easy, attractive fixes. Create a visual barrier for birds to see using window tape for vertical lines, string or ribbon hanging down, decals, or window film. Put these on the outside of the window, spaced 2 inches or 5 centimeters apart or less. You can also make window strikes less deadly. Keep bird feeders and baths close to windows. One point five feet or a half-metre away or closer. You can also u screens on the outside of windows. To learn more visit FLAP dot org. Thank you, bird hero.
It's the start of National Wildlife Week in Canada and the start of spring migration, so it's the perfect time to make sure your windows are as bird-friendly as they can be.
This great poster by @rosemarymosco.com summarizes the problem of window collisions; learn what you can do at birdsafe.ca
Does anyone know a good nonprofit that is trying to raise awareness of/stop inhumane treatment at ICE camps?

A screenshot of the employee controlled Instagram account shows a post from staff with over 6,300 likes and hundred of reshares. The post reads "Hey Y'all, long time (10 years 💔) employee of Vortex Doughnuts here."
A photo of a text exchange between an employee and owner Mollie Skalski. The employee says "Hey I really need to know because I have auto pays due the next couple days are we getting our paychecks this week?" Mollie replies "Unfortunately that is one of the reasons why we closed abruptly. We don't have enough money for payroll or any of the other things that need paid. There is more money going out than coming in. We tried to get a loan to help with that but no luck. I would suggest you apply for emergency unemployment. That's always why we were offering the equipment to offset that. I know that's not what you want to hear and again we are truly sorry."
The owner of Vortex Doughnuts in Asheville concealed the imminent closure of the store and now refuses to give employees their final paychecks. Staff had been seeking to purchase the business 💔

Main issue is a massive escalation in police surveillance. Renaming of McCormick field (after a bank) also on agenda.
