Cash-strapped DePaul closes the curtain on Downtown’s historic Reskin Theatre The landmarked 1,400-seat Beaux-Arts playhouse was designed by Benjamin H. Marshall, one of Chicago's preeminent architects.

For DePaul, money is tight. But tight is relative: The university managed to come up with enough scratch to start construction this year on a $42 million basketball and athletics center on its Lincoln Park campus.

At the same moment the university is walking away from the museum, plans are moving ahead for a state-of-the-art athletic facility, for which the university received more than $10 million in donations . . . The letter calls the facility “rewards to the few,” as opposed to a museum meant for all.

The board goes on to complain of a “seemingly never-ending whirlwind of both uncertainty and poor decision-making by the University administration” and accuses the administration of leaving a “jewel” of the campus “battered and discarded” despite their “massive effort” to keep the museum open.

DePaul Art Museum Closing In June: 'It's A Huge Loss' The museum's final exhibits will open March 5. The decision to close was made "to ensure long-term financial sustainability for our university," DePaul's president announced Thursday.

Closure shows “there’s not a priority for the arts or the humanities” at DePaul, especially when the university is investing & developing other divisions...City Council approved DePaul’s plans for a $60 million basketball & athletics practice facility in December blockclubchicago.org/2026/02/26/d...

Former DePaul players and ex-Bull Antonio Blakeney charged in scheme to rig games In the 70-page indictment, authorities say fixers recruited the college basketball players with "bribe payments" usually ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 per game.

so, my employer is defunding libraries while building a $60 million gym to be used only by athletes . . . teams that have accepted bribes to lose games

A whole host of colleges & universities are using Trump as cover for shock doctrine cuts to faculty & staff, while diverting funds to public-private partnerships & SaaS contracts they hope will float rocky investing by trustees & endowment managers.

Don't regurgitate their barely cogent rationales.

Four Frictions: or, How to Resist AI in Education - Public Books We are calling for resistance to the AI industry’s ongoing capture of higher education.

"universities are being infiltrated by a commercial industry that exploits students+faculty as data mines

frenzy w/o consulting their faculty, collecting empirical data on whether gen AI is pedagogically useful, or pausing to inquire about the long-term impact"

Faculty were not consulted about these courses of action.

Kind of. Also depaul faulty here. The reference is to the library on the campus in downtown Chicago. The library on the Lincoln park campus, half an hour away, is not facing closure but still deep cuts to staff. Many students and faculty are wholly based downtown in the loop.

😮 A university without a library ceases to be a university. Full stop. I’m flabbergasted that a “determination” about a library’s future — besides FUND IT AND STAFF IT — needs to be made by an institute of higher learning.
