Love and Rockets - Ball Of Confusion. HD
Love and Rockets - Ball Of Confusion. HD YouTube video by Beggars Banquet Records

Evolution, revolution, gun control, sound of soul
(Economics, Reaganomics, birth control, the status quo)
Shooting rockets to the moon, kids growing up too soon
The politicians say
And the band played on

Both have wild videos… and that jives with the rise of social media/video platforms of the day.

Windowlicker is IMHO a much more musically rich track technically… the 2:30 mark is a masterclass drop (I made that drop my ringtone)

The hopes of a possible world paused when Lennon died.

The world went to shit when David Bowie died.

Adversarial Poetry as a Universal Single-Turn Jailbreak Mechanism in Large Language Models

“Adversarial Poetry, an efficient single-turn general-purpose attack where the poetic structure functions as a high-leverage stylistic adversary.” This is almost too good. arxiv.org/html/2511.15...

Hearing Cocteau Twins more frequently in coffee shop 20 yrs post release is somewhat validating, and sad that a generation of music listeners just let this band slide past. Maybe GenX has more in common than GenZ than I thought.

Is it me or did a bunch of NIH grants just vanish over the last month? I thought i should take pulse after a deadline, make a plan for the next few months, and start hunkering down… but when i tried looking up the call… vanished.

How is anyone supposed to prepare for these things?

Just ordered some new coffee mugs for the lab.

Science is an interconnected system- humans, animals, and environments working in tandem.

"Science means everyone and everything” means science should be deliberately collaborative, multi-disciplinary, and benefit not only people, but everything else.

At this point it was clear I was the joke of the day… we all started laughing, and the roasts went on until all had their say.

I am so honoured and fortunate to work with such a great team of students, technicians, and staff.

QOTD legend!

Then another student chimes in “Oh what i hate is when people put on a loose shirt, unbuttoned over a t-shirt… looks so sloppy…”

You could guess what I was wearing.

(about an hour earlier, i was caught in a torrential rain storm and my clothes and shoes were soaked.. so i took off my shoes and put on my Bata slippers… with my socks on… to dry off)

She pauses and then says “Of course not you Dr Basran… you know, like Birkies and socks”

She asks and answers first
“I really dislike regular blue jeans.. its summer! Either dark or light is fine, but i am sick of plain blue jeans”.

Interesting response me thinks… then a summer student volunteers…

“Oh this is easy! Socks and sandles! I mean who does that?”

They’re silly ice breakers to make the meetings a tad less prescriptive. I often provide the questions but this time my lab manager pipes up and says “I have a QOTD!” … it not out the ordinary for others to suggest them so, i roll with it.

Her question: “What fashion trend do you despise?”

It was the last in person summer lab meeting and the team served me up a royal roast.

I start our meeting with a QOTD= question of the day. These are simple as “Whats your favourite movie” to weird inane ones like “What’s the worst thing to unexpectedly find growing in your belly button?”
