I’ve seen it in plenty of kitchen islands, meeting the stated criteria for “in isolation”. They work enough, I’d say. I think I’m relying on an in-line vent for the thing coming closest to an S in my current buildout.
But even if you need one, you can have a cheater, typically small enough that you fit it behind or aside the sink. While it’s a unique example, I’ve also seen the difference in drain rates with an install I’ve corrected. It’s pretty serious.

Wasn’t this studied? It’s been like, 7 years but I’ve made apartment choices based on the literature before and it’s guided my purchases afterwards. It never really seemed wrong.
