Breaking: HHS’s ban on gender-affirming care is struck down. Rarely have I read a ruling this sharply worded.
“This case is one of a long list of examples of how a leader’s wanton disregard for the rule of law causes very real harm to very real people.”

This week we have had children out of school due to illness or tornado (!) 4/5 days. I, however, have been at work 5/5 days, because dissertations don't stop for storms or sick kids. This dissertation will be written entirely by the grace of @jacksonloper.bsky.social.
This Is How You Lose The Hundred Years' War
Thanks! I'm delighted so many people have taken a moment to wrangle with social work ethics. As social workers, I think codes of ethics are well worth a wrangle!

Speaking of Threads, this one got me in the feels.
A rainbow-colored shield against a white background, emblazoned with an em dash on its center. A ribbon runs along the bottom reading "Defend the Em Dash".

You don’t write like AI—AI writes like you. Defend the em dash.

This is the millennial sleeper cell activation phrase. We hear this & we flock to the closest government building & attempt to overthrow it

there's so much bad in the world but there's also people who lift up and carry an elderly bat around every day so he can pretend he's flying again, and that's the part of the world I think is worth fighting for

No but this is entirely correct

It seems all Kansas-issued trans drivers' licenses are invalid, effective tomorrow
It is now illegal for trans people to drive a car until they surrender their license at a DMV (that most will need to drive to) and have it reissued with the wrong gender marker
This was never about woman's sports
Not just by the British, but by an actual king! We're getting out-No Kings'd by A KING.
What's so amazing about Jim Henson as a puppeteer is that he could literally be explaining that Kermit is made out of felt and ping pong balls and yet Kermit still feels alive the whole time he's doing it

We are a people who by February
want to kill the sky for being so gray
and angry at us. "What did we do?"

If you can substitute "hungry ghost trapped in a jar" for "AI" in a sentence it's probably a valid use case for LLMs. Take "I have a bunch of hungry ghosts in jars, they mainly write SQL queries for me". Sure. Reasonable use case.
"My girlfriend is a hungry ghost I trapped in a jar"? No. Deranged.
"Florence Craye ran her Powered by the Apocalypse homebrew the other night, Jeeves. Have you played PbtA, Jeeves?" "I have not yet had the pleasure, sir." "Nor have I, Jeeves. Not a twenty-sider to be had. One would think dice technology hadn't advanced since the days of Parker Brothers." I took a harrowed sip of my energy drink. "I tried to roll initiative and was called an 'incurable gamist.'" "Most distressing, sir." "Give Bertram Wooster dungeons, Jeeves. Give him dragons. Give him dice by the handful. I'm a simple man, Jeeves." "Yes, sir."
This is the coolest fucking form of solidarity I have ever seen.
Bravo.
This is perfection

You shake yourself awake in the cold North Atlantic water. You are not online. It is July of 1858. You are a baleen whale, and you have changed your mind. The future most not come to pass. The telegraph cable must break.
The Nobel Prize committee should announce the World Cup winner tomorrow

This cross-pollination IS how new ideas happen. EVERY field needs humanistic thinking, that's why they call PhDs "Doctors of Philosophy"
I can’t wait for the articles—“Democrats won big Tuesday night. Here’s why that’s bad for Democrats.”
