The projects supported through the MNRTF bring joy and inspiration to millions and are good for Michigan’s economy.
There are two projects in this year's allocations that affect my district.

Today, the Michigan Senate passed legislation requires hospitals to staff facilites without relying on over-working nurses. Routine use of forced overtime is dangerous for patients, reduces the quality of care, and drives away great nurses.

DHHS is estimating an additional 589 employees will be needed to process the additional work-search paperwork at a cost of $80.3M/year for the State of Michigan.

This shift diverted revenue from host communities & k12 schools to roads while driving out-of-state & local buyers away from licensed operators.
Voters approved an excise tax on cannabis. That approach resulted in the most successful law in the nation in terms of participation in the legal market.
When we increased the cannabis tax last year, I warned that this would not only destabilize a new and struggling legal cannabis market; but, also, that these new taxes would push buyers away, diminishing participation in the legal market and tax revenue along with it.

Governor Whitmer's last State of the State focused on continuing our efforts to improve literacy and lowering the cost of housing and health-care.
I was particularly excited to hear her highlight the literacy legislation we passed & how we must continue investing in kids to meet our literacy goals.

We also need to take the next steps. Literacy doesn't end with good 4th grade reading scores. We need to maintain the effort as kids get older and we need to continue pushing past decoding to help kids develop all of the skills necessary to be an expert reader.
I am excited to hear Governor Whitmer support training and early literacy curriculum that is informed by the science of reading. We passed a great law and now we need to follow through with funding.

Right now the Michigan House Oversight Committee is digging into the conditions at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility. This facility is plagued by terrible conditions, especially mold. The state needs to step up and treat the women in prison with dignity.
